\/>\nresults of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Disaster Prone Communities<br \/>\n(DPC) in Ghana have been held in Accra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The WASH in DPC<br \/>\nwhich began in 2014 and ended in 2017 also aim at addressing shocks occasioned<br \/>\nby extreme weather events particularly flooding on WASH facilities by providing<br \/>\ndurable water supply solutions to prevent the contamination\u00a0 of water supply sources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">It also seek to<br \/>\nprovide resilient and durable sanitation facilities and good hygiene practices<br \/>\nin the disaster prone communities to prevent potential health impact and after<br \/>\nfloods as well as assist communities to live normal lives after disasters. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The dialogue brought<br \/>\ntogether officials from the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources,<br \/>\nNational Disaster Management Organization, Ghana Education Service, Coalition<br \/>\nof NGO\u2019s in Water and Sanitation and the United Nations Agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">At the opening of<br \/>\nthe dialogue Ms Sylvia Lopez-Ekra, United Nations Resident Coordinator, in a<br \/>\nspeech read on her behalf noted that around the world including Ghana, floods,<br \/>\ndrought and other extreme weather are being made worse by climate disruption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Ms Lopez \u2013Ekra noted<br \/>\nthat floods in particular are one of the most common type of natural disaster<br \/>\nin the country and one of the most harmful to people and property.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">\u201cGlobal warming is<br \/>\nshifting rainfall patterns, making heavy rain more frequent in many areas of<br \/>\nthe country, In addition, human alternation of the land and the destruction of<br \/>\nnatural protective system are putting communities at greater risk of<br \/>\nexperiencing destructive and costly floods.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">She said because of<br \/>\nfloods, precious lives are lost, crops are ruined and properties including<br \/>\nschools and hospital are damaged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">According to her,<br \/>\nthe great injustice of the climate crises was that its effects fell most on<br \/>\nthose least responsible for it\u00a0 and it<br \/>\nwas the most vulnerable that get hurt first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">She was said there<br \/>\nwas a lot that could be done to ensure that when floods occur, the resilience<br \/>\nof communities was strengthened to ensure that one disaster did not lead to<br \/>\nanother <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">\u201cThis is what the<br \/>\nJoint UN Programme on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Disaster prone<br \/>\nCommunities in the Northern Region of Ghana which was implemented from 2014 and<br \/>\n2017 sought to achieved.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">She said the WASH in<br \/>\nDPC over the years which benefited over 300,000 people would be replicated and<br \/>\nlessons leant would be shared with other communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Ms Lopez-Ekra<br \/>\ncommended Global Affairs Canada for sponsoring the WASH in DPC over the period.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Ms Suzy Abaidoo,<br \/>\nWASH Programmes Officer, Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR) said<br \/>\nthe ministry was developing a new National Water Policy to replace the old one<br \/>\nwhich was developed in 2007.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Ms Abaidoo was<br \/>\noptimistic that by the second quarter of 2021, the Ministry would be ready with<br \/>\nthe draft policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">She said the review<br \/>\nof the National Water Policy would reflect the current global, Africa Regional<br \/>\nand style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Mr. Kweku Quansah,<br \/>\nDeputy Director, Environmental Health and Sanitation Director, MSWR stressed<br \/>\nthe need for the provision of sustained services in the midst of increasing<br \/>\npopulation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Mr. Quansah said the<br \/>\nMSWR was also developing a new Environmental Sanitation Policy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The WASH in DPC<br \/>\nProgramme has led to significant improvement in 265 targeted communities and<br \/>\nbenefitted 323,416 people through the construction of flood resilient water<br \/>\nsupply facilities in communities and flood resilient institutional sanitation<br \/>\nfacilities in 222 schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The programme<br \/>\nevaluation recounted significant achievements and same required a follow up so<br \/>\nthat beneficiaries could reap the full benefits of facilities and services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"
