Accra Dec. 12, GNA –
\nA Policy dialogue which seeks to offer platform for stakeholders to discuss the
\nresults of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Disaster Prone Communities
\n(DPC) in Ghana have been held in Accra.<\/span><\/p>\n

The WASH in DPC
\nwhich began in 2014 and ended in 2017 also aim at addressing shocks occasioned
\nby extreme weather events particularly flooding on WASH facilities by providing
\ndurable water supply solutions to prevent the contamination\u00a0 of water supply sources.<\/span><\/p>\n

It also seek to
\nprovide resilient and durable sanitation facilities and good hygiene practices
\nin the disaster prone communities to prevent potential health impact and after
\nfloods as well as assist communities to live normal lives after disasters. <\/span><\/p>\n

The dialogue brought
\ntogether officials from the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources,
\nNational Disaster Management Organization, Ghana Education Service, Coalition
\nof NGO\u2019s in Water and Sanitation and the United Nations Agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the opening of
\nthe dialogue Ms Sylvia Lopez-Ekra, United Nations Resident Coordinator, in a
\nspeech read on her behalf noted that around the world including Ghana, floods,
\ndrought and other extreme weather are being made worse by climate disruption.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms Lopez \u2013Ekra noted
\nthat floods in particular are one of the most common type of natural disaster
\nin the country and one of the most harmful to people and property.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGlobal warming is
\nshifting rainfall patterns, making heavy rain more frequent in many areas of
\nthe country, In addition, human alternation of the land and the destruction of
\nnatural protective system are putting communities at greater risk of
\nexperiencing destructive and costly floods.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She said because of
\nfloods, precious lives are lost, crops are ruined and properties including
\nschools and hospital are damaged.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to her,
\nthe great injustice of the climate crises was that its effects fell most on
\nthose least responsible for it\u00a0 and it
\nwas the most vulnerable that get hurt first.<\/span><\/p>\n

She was said there
\nwas a lot that could be done to ensure that when floods occur, the resilience
\nof communities was strengthened to ensure that one disaster did not lead to
\nanother <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what the
\nJoint UN Programme on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Disaster prone
\nCommunities in the Northern Region of Ghana which was implemented from 2014 and
\n2017 sought to achieved.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

She said the WASH in
\nDPC over the years which benefited over 300,000 people would be replicated and
\nlessons leant would be shared with other communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms Lopez-Ekra
\ncommended Global Affairs Canada for sponsoring the WASH in DPC over the period.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms Suzy Abaidoo,
\nWASH Programmes Officer, Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR) said
\nthe ministry was developing a new National Water Policy to replace the old one
\nwhich was developed in 2007.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms Abaidoo was
\noptimistic that by the second quarter of 2021, the Ministry would be ready with
\nthe draft policy.<\/span><\/p>\n

She said the review
\nof the National Water Policy would reflect the current global, Africa Regional
\nand national developmental discourse.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Kweku Quansah,
\nDeputy Director, Environmental Health and Sanitation Director, MSWR stressed
\nthe need for the provision of sustained services in the midst of increasing
\npopulation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Quansah said the
\nMSWR was also developing a new Environmental Sanitation Policy. <\/span><\/p>\n

The WASH in DPC
\nProgramme has led to significant improvement in 265 targeted communities and
\nbenefitted 323,416 people through the construction of flood resilient water
\nsupply facilities in communities and flood resilient institutional sanitation
\nfacilities in 222 schools.<\/span><\/p>\n

The programme
\nevaluation recounted significant achievements and same required a follow up so
\nthat beneficiaries could reap the full benefits of facilities and services.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stakeholders are
\nexpected to come out with an agreed set of policy relevant messages to be
\nconsidered by the MSWR by ensuring that resilience of WASH programme is
\ncaptured in the review discussions.<\/span><\/p>\n
