{"id":763679,"date":"2019-12-12T15:20:40","date_gmt":"2019-12-12T15:20:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/12\/12\/accras-traffic-warden-is-dead\/"},"modified":"2019-12-12T15:20:40","modified_gmt":"2019-12-12T15:20:40","slug":"accras-traffic-warden-is-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/12\/12\/accras-traffic-warden-is-dead\/","title":{"rendered":"Accra\u2019s Traffic Warden Is Dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Abdul Rahman Haruna aka Awudu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For over two decades or so, one young man<br \/>\nvoluntarily controlled vehicular traffic on some nightmarish junctions and<br \/>\nU-turns in Accra.<\/p>\n<p>He filled the vacuum created by the<br \/>\nabsence of traffic cops on knotty spots in Accra\u2019s road network. <\/p>\n<p>Awudu, as he is popularly called by<br \/>\nmotorists, passed on last Monday. He is a regular figure around the Awudume<br \/>\nCemetery, at times when traffic logjams occurred at the U-turn on the stretch<br \/>\ntowards the Abossey Okai Roundabout. <\/p>\n<p>As a mobile traffic warden he moves from<br \/>\nplace to place depending on the severity of the traffic logjams at such places.\n<\/p>\n<p>He used to be regular at the Adabraka<br \/>\nOfficial town and Circle area but known to also sometimes direct traffic at<br \/>\nfar-flung areas as Abeka.<\/p>\n<p>Many are fascinated at how he manages to<br \/>\nacquire his traffic police-like uniforms and a cap to match regularly,<br \/>\nreplacing these when they are worn out. <\/p>\n<p>His affability and dexterity at directing<br \/>\nvehicles endeared him to many motorists who dropped money for his service. He<br \/>\nwas able to pick such monies without much interruption to his work.<\/p>\n<p>A few days before his death one of his<br \/>\nadmirers videoed him at work and sent same online. The video spread quickly,<br \/>\nthe feedback making Awudu happy, as evidenced from his response also online.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Some people told me that they saw my<br \/>\nvideo and were happy about it. Somebody even dropped me a GH\u00a210 note as he<br \/>\ncongratulated me for doing a good job. I realized that it was Sakiru who<br \/>\nvideoed me. I was later invited to Papaye\u2019 he was captured as saying on video<br \/>\nin perfect Twi. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His name has been given as Abdul Rahman<br \/>\nHaruna; Awudu is the shortened form for any name preceded by Abdul among many<br \/>\nethnic groups in the north. <\/p>\n<p>Social media carried many tributes originating from his admirers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By A.R.
