THE
\nCOCOA Life Initiative of Mondelez International, a leading chocolate
\nmanufacturer, organised a women\u2019s summit recently which taught participants how
\nto engage in agriculture, make them independent and protect the environment. <\/p>\n

Country
\nLead for Mondelez Ghana, Yaa Peprah Amekudzi, in a welcome address, highlighted
\nthe role women played in cocoa farming, adding that such efforts often went
\nunrecognized. <\/p>\n

She
\nstated that the programme was designed with the knowledge of empowering women
\nin cocoa communities to better manage their family finances, increase income
\nfrom other sources rather than solely depending on farming as a means of
\nsubsistence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe
\nhave women\u2019s empowerment action plans which look at helping women run more
\nsuccessful farms; take a more active role in community decision making; giving
\ntheir children quality education; become more entrepreneurial, make cocoa
\nfarming attractive to younger ones and protecting the environment,\u201d she
\nadded. <\/p>\n

The
\n2019 Mondelez Women\u2019s Summit was organised under the theme \u201cConverge,
\nConnect, Empower, Recharge\u201d in Accra.<\/p>\n

In
\na keynote address Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection,
\nFreda Prempeh, commended the cocoa life initiative for bringing women in the cocoa
\nindustry together to educate and empower them with knowledge and also aid them to
\nbe resourceful in their communities, protect the environment and recognize
\ntheir contribution in the cocoa industry.<\/p>\n

She
\nstated that women performed 60 per cent of the world\u2019s work, produced 50 per
\ncent of the food and yet managed only 10 per cent of income and owned just a
\nper cent of property. She said two thirds of workers in cocoa farming were
\nwomen hence the need to empower women to be at the top in the income hierarchy.<\/p>\n

She
\nhighlighted government\u2019s commitment to agriculture and its interest in
\nrewarding hardworking women and strengthening their rights to give them a voice
\nand make available interventions such as MASLOC, motorized pruners, motorized
\nspraying machines and other mechanical equipment to improve their yields.<\/p>\n

The
\nconference had in attendance female cocoa farmers from 17 districts across the
\ncountry and had the Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection
