{"id":759597,"date":"2019-12-06T11:39:12","date_gmt":"2019-12-06T11:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/12\/06\/row-over-kumasi-kidnappers-cash\/"},"modified":"2019-12-06T11:39:12","modified_gmt":"2019-12-06T11:39:12","slug":"row-over-kumasi-kidnappers-cash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/12\/06\/row-over-kumasi-kidnappers-cash\/","title":{"rendered":"Row Over Kumasi Kidnappers Cash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The suspects<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There appears to be a disagreement between the<br \/>\npolice and some four persons on trial for allegedly kidnapping two Canadian<br \/>\nladies in Kumasi in June this year over how much money they had on them at the time<br \/>\nof their arrest.<\/p>\n<p>While Jeff Omarsa, one of the accused, claims the<br \/>\npolice are holding on to his GH\u00a2600, the investigator in the matter, Detective<br \/>\nMathew Anokye, told the court yesterday that there was no such money with the<br \/>\npolice.<\/p>\n<p>The detective, however, agreed that Sampson<br \/>\nAghalor, the mastermind of the kidnapping group, has GH\u00a2650 with the police<br \/>\nwhich will be released to him as directed by the court.<\/p>\n<p>The issue generated heated argument between the<br \/>\naccused person\u2019s counsel, Yaw Dankwa, and Hilda Craig, a senior state attorney<br \/>\nprosecuting the case.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecutor became infuriated when counsel<br \/>\nsuggested in court that the police were keeping the money to themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Dankwa, in his submission, pleaded with the<br \/>\ncourt to summon the person holding the monies and items taken from the accused<br \/>\npersons to ascertain how much money Jeff Omarsa actually has with the police.<\/p>\n<p>He said there was nowhere in the police practice<br \/>\nregulations which allow them to take money from an accused person and keep it<br \/>\nto themselves without disclosing which bank it has been deposited and the<br \/>\ninterest accrued, if any.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecutor described the counsel\u2019s allegation<br \/>\nas unfortunate, saying Jeff Omarsa was not the only person whose items were<br \/>\ntaken after the arrest.<\/p>\n<p>She said those who were discharged had all<br \/>\ntheir items, including monies, some of which were dollars returned to them.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Craig added that the accused persons were<br \/>\narrested in Kumasi and all the items taken from them were listed in the chain of<br \/>\ncustody records and they would do well to cross-check.<\/p>\n<p>When queried by the court as to who would be<br \/>\nthe best person to have knowledge on the items taken from the accused persons,<br \/>\nthe investigator, Detective Anokye, said ACP Apenteng is the supervising<br \/>\nofficer in charge of the case, adding that when the accused persons were<br \/>\narrested, exhibits were listed in Kumasi before they were brought to Accra. <\/p>\n<p>The court presided over by Justice Georgina<br \/>\nMensah-Datsa ordered the police to release the GH\u00a2650 to<br \/>\nSampson Aghalor and further ordered ACP Apenteng to appear before the court to<br \/>\nexplain how much Jeff Omarsa has with the police.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disclosures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Justice Mensah-Datsa has indicated<br \/>\nthat she is willing to begin the trial with the disclosures that the prosecution<br \/>\nhas so far made since it is a continuous process.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, eight persons were arrested for the kidnapping which attracted local and international media attention but later four persons were released after the investigation.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>BY Gibril Abdul Razak<\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The suspects There appears to be a disagreement between the police and some four persons on trial for allegedly kidnapping two Canadian ladies in Kumasi in June this year over how much money they had on them at the time of their arrest.
