\n

The South African Development
\nCommunity has called on the United States of America (US) and the European
\nUnion (EU) to immediately remove sanctions against Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n

SADC in a statement said it was
\ndeeply concerned that the ongoing sanctions by the EU and the US were hurting
\nthe Zimbabwean economy.<\/p>\n

SADC said the lifting of the
\nsanctions by both the EU and US would lead to the road of recovery for the
\nZimbabwean economy.<\/p>\n

The region said the EU had
\nimposed an arms embargo, as well as asset freeze and a travel ban on targeted
\nentities and certain individuals.<\/p>\n

The nature of the US sanctions
\nmeans that US nationals cannot do business with state-owned enterprises, three
\nZanu-PF-owned companies and about 100 people as from 20 October 2019.<\/p>\n

SADC said these sanctions had a
\ndirect impact on employment and income generation opportunities and the
\nlivelihoods of ordinary Zimbabweans.<\/p>\n

The group said all member states
\nof SADC supported the action to remove the sanctions immediately.<\/p>\n

STATEMENT BY THE SOUTHERN AFRICAN
\nDEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY CALLING FOR THE IMMEDIATE REMOVAL OF SANCTIONS IMPOSED ON
\nTHE REPUBLIC OF ZIMBABWE<\/p>\n

On this day, 25th October 2019,
\nthe Southern African Development Community (SADC) reiterates its call for the
\nremoval of all forms of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe to pave way for
\nsocio-economic transformation and economic development of Zimbabwe. The removal
\nof sanctions will benefit Zimbabweans and the SADC Region, as well as, enhance
\ncooperation of SADC with the European Union (EU) and the United States of
\nAmerica (USA).<\/p>\n

INTRODUCTION<\/p>\n

The SADC Region is deeply
\nconcerned about the prevailing sanctions imposed by the EU and the USA on the
\nRepublic of Zimbabwe and is mindful of the impact of these sanctions.<\/p>\n

2 The sanctions have proved to be
\ndirectly affecting entities beyond the so-called targeted individuals, and have
\na negative impact on the credibility of Zimbabwe and serious trickle-down
\neffects on the economy and people of Zimbabwe, and by extension, the SADC
\nRegion.<\/p>\n

3. In recognizing the
\nsocio-economic impact of the sanctions on Zimbabwe, the 39th SADC Summit of
\nHeads of State and Government held in Dar es Salaam, the United Republic of
\nTanzania expressed solidarity with Zimbabwe, and called for the immediate
\nlifting of the sanctions to facilitate socio-economic recovery in the country.<\/p>\n

NATURE OF SANCTIONS<\/p>\n

4 The EU sanctions on Zimbabwe
\ncomprise of an arms embargo, as well as an asset freeze and travel ban on
\ntargeted people and entities;<\/p>\n

5 The nature of USA Sanctions on
\nZimbabwe is in two key instruments namely. <\/p>\n

(I) The Zimbabwe Democracy and
\nEconomic Recovery Act (ZIDERA), and<\/p>\n

(ii) The \u201ctargeted sanctions
\nprogram\u201d, which comprises a list of individuals and entities, and specifically
\ninstructs US nationals not to do business with these designated entities or
\ntheir affiliated entities.<\/p>\n

The current list as of October
\n2019 includes\u2019, 13 state-owned enterprises; 13 so-called \u201cother\u201d enterprises;
\n25 farms; 3 Zanu-PF owned Enterprises; and about 100 individuals.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
