PEASANT FARMERS
\nhave indicated that though they fully support government\u2019s pronouncement to ban
\nrice importation and other food crops that can be produced in Ghana by 2022, they
\nprefer an immediate ban. <\/p>\n

In
\na solidarity message to farmers on the occasion of the 35th<\/sup> edition
\nof farmers day signed by Abdul-Rahman Mohammed, national president and board
\nchairman of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG), noted that
\nadopting Nigeria\u2019s food importation ban concept would not only help to reduce
\nGhana\u2019s import bill but create employment opportunities in Ghana and stabilize
\nthe cedi, which would as well put smiles on the faces of smallholder rice
\nfarmers. <\/p>\n

It
\nalso called for the institutional purchase of local rice by all government
\ninstitutions such as the school feeding programme, free SHS, the military and
\npara-institutions.<\/p>\n

Also,
\nit said \u201cgovernment should mandate all banks to increase their loan portfolio
\nwith low interest rate on agriculture. There should be flexible procedures for
\nsmallholder farmers to be able to access these loans,\u201d as well as increase
\nbudget allocation and subsidies for combine harvesters, rice mills and rice
\npackaging materials.<\/p>\n

Again,
\nit called for new technologies to address aflatoxin and other post-harvest
\nchallenges in rice production while bringing storage facilities closer to rice
\nfarming areas by first completing the One District One Warehouse programme,
\ncommissioning the completed ones and setting up temporary cocoons in the communities.<\/p>\n

Additionally,
\nPFAG appealed to government to ensure timely release and distribution of good
\nquality fertilizer and seeds to rice farmers as well as ensuring that,
\nstringent measures are taken to curb smuggling of same.<\/p>\n

Further pressing issues<\/strong><\/p>\n

According
\nto PFAG, \u201cSmallholder rice farmers who are keen in agribusiness are
\napprehensive and despondent, as the rice they produced during the last crop
\nseason lies waste and possibly to the vagaries of harmattan bush fires.<\/p>\n

\u201cFarmers
\nare confronted with lack of access to combine harvesters, lack of storage and
\nexploitation by traders who have taken advantage of the desperate situation.
\nThe National Food Buffer Stock is on record in November 2019, to have publicly
\nannounced plans to mop up the surplus rice by providing minimum guarantee
\nprices to farmers which never materialized, leaving rice farmers to their fate.\n<\/p>\n

Thanking
\nPresident Nana Addo\u00a0Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his commitment to developing Ghana
\nthrough agricultural modernization by introducing the \u201cPlanting for Food and
\nJobs\u201d<\/em>, it stated that the high appetite for
\nimported rice had significantly contributed to rice millers lacking market for
\nGhana rice leading to the current rice glut in Northern Ghana. <\/p>\n
