\n
The state is yet to conclude its investigations
\ninto the case involving some 10 persons arrested in connection with an alleged
\nplot to destabilise the country and overthrow the Akufo-Addo administration.<\/p>\n
The accused persons who are facing charges, including
\ntreason felony, are before a Kaneshie District Court where a committal
\nproceeding is taking place for their possible arraignment at a High Court.<\/p>\n
Yesterday, all the suspects who are mostly
\nsecurity personnel were brought to the District Court for the committal
\nproceedings amid heavy security escort.<\/p>\n
The Proprietor of the Citadel Hospital, Dr.
\nFrederick Yao Mac-Palm, who is a Medical Doctor and believed to be the ring
\nleader; Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP\/Dr.\u00a0 Benjamin Agordzo, as well as a senior
\nofficer, Col. Samuel Kojo Gameli were all marched to the courtroom by the
\nescorting officers.<\/p>\n
It turned out that the security agencies are
\nyet to conclude their investigations and forward the docket to the Office of
\nthe Attorney-General (AG) for advice.<\/p>\n
The conclusion of investigations will also help
\nthe AG to prepare the Bill of Indictment detailing the charges against each accused
\nperson as well as a summary of evidence and exhibits the state intends to rely on
\nfor the trial if the accused persons are committed by the District Court.<\/p>\n
The prosecution led by ASP Sylvester Asare told
\nthe presiding Magistrate Eleanor Barnes-Botchway that they had still not concluded
\nthe investigations.<\/p>\n
He pleaded with the court to adjourn the case to
\nenable them to carry out thorough investigations but could not give any indications
\nas to when their work would be completed and the docket forwarded to the AG for
\nlegal advice.<\/p>\n
Victor K. Adawudu, representing Dr. Mac-Palm
\nand some of the other accused persons, earlier inquired from the magistrate
\nwhether the prosecution had filed the bill of indictment but the magistrate said
\nshe does not have anything on the records. <\/p>\n
Provisional Charges<\/strong><\/p>\nProvisionally, all the accused persons are facing
\nfive counts of treason felony, conspiracy, treason, abetment of treason felony and
\npossession of explosives and ammunition without lawful excuse.<\/p>\n
Their pleas have not been taken as the charges
\nare indictable offences and the proper trial has to be conducted at the High
\nCourt.<\/p>\n
Remand<\/strong><\/p>\nThey were all remanded by the court into police
\nand military custody as the police said they were \u2018far advanced\u2019 with their
\ninvestigations. According to ASP Asare, the prosecution required a few weeks to
\nget their house in order.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe say that in the coming weeks, we shall
\nindicate to this court our intention to commence the committal proceedings,\u201d he
\nhad said in court.<\/p>\n
IGP<\/strong><\/p>\nOne of the suspects, ACP Dr. \u00a0Benjamin Agordzo, who is senior police officer,
\nwas at the last sitting released to the custody of the Inspector General of
\nPolice (IGP) on the orders of the court.<\/p>\n
His lawyer Martin Kpebu had told the court that
\nthere is convention in the police service where senior officers who find
\nthemselves in such situations are released to the IGP for custody.<\/p>\n
Other
\nSuspects<\/strong><\/p>\nOther accused persons being tried in connection
\nwith the alleged coup plot are Donya Kafui, aka Ezor, a local weapon
\nmanufacturer (blacksmith) from Alavanyo, and Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu, aka BB
\nor ADC, both civilians.<\/p>\n
The military officers caught in the alleged
\ncoup plot apart from Col. are Gameli, Lance Corporal Ali Solomon, Lance
\nCorporal Sylvester Akapewu, Lance Corporal Seidu Abubakar and one WO II Esther
\nSaan aka Mama Gee of the Military Academy and Training Schools (MATS) and also
\na civilian employee of the Ghana Armed Forces, Gershon Akpa. <\/p>\n
