Barbara Aisha Ayisi <\/strong><\/p>\nThe Ministry of Works and Housing has
\nannounced the possible establishment of a National Housing Fund to ensure
\nadequate financing for the countries affordable housing programme.<\/p>\n
The Fund, according to the Deputy
\nMinister of Works and Housing, Barbara Aisha Ayisi, will provide a dedicated
\nsource of financing and serve as a guarantee to leverage, and also off-take
\nprivate sector investment and construction of housing units that are affordable
\nto the ordinary Ghanaian.<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201cSuccessful cases in the delivery of mass
\naffordable housing programmes have been founded on the existence of a dedicated
\nhousing financing arrangement and I believe this will be the key to unlocking
\nGhana\u2019s prospects for affordable housing provision,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Mrs. Ayisi was speaking at the
\nopening of the 127th Board Meeting and Retreat of the Shelter Afrique, a
\npan-African finance institution that exclusively supports the development of
\nthe housing and real estate sector in Africa.<\/p>\n
The Deputy Minister explained that
\nplans are far advanced to sell the idea to Cabinet which she said is the key to
\nunlocking Ghana\u2019s prospects for affordable housing.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
Nghidinua Daniel, Chairperson of
\nthe Shelter Afrique Board, speaking on the theme: \u2018Implementation of
\nInstitutional and Legal Frameworks: the Key to successful Affordable Housing
\nProgrammes\u2019 said the conference was to help the Board to \u201ctouch base\u201d with key
\nstakeholders and partners, especially the government of Ghana, which is a
\nfounding member of the Company.<\/p>\n
He said the issue of affordable
\nhousing was not \u201can issue only for the government\u201d but for all other
\nstakeholders, and that was why Shelter Afrique, had decided to confer with key
\nstakeholders in housing, finance and development, including members of
\nacademia, financial institutions as well as estate developers, who were already
\nin the housing business.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
He said already, the Company had invested a total of 55.6 million dollars into the housing sector in Ghana, some in technical training, some as loans for local banks to invest in the sector and some through partnerships with government in its provision of housing units.<\/p>\n
