President Nana Akufo-Addo<\/strong><\/p>\n

President
\nNana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday sounded a cautionary note to members of
\nthe Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) over the seeming attacks on
\nforeigners who have been accused of doing retail business which is a preserve
\nof Ghanaians.<\/p>\n

He
\nasked them not to take the law into their own hands as they seek to enforce the
\nlaw on retail trading.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople
\ncannot take the law into their own hands and enforce the law. If we do that,
\nGhana will become chaotic. We have to be careful about this phenomenon of
\ntaking the law into our own hands about situations that government is yet to
\nresolve,\u201d President Akufo-Addo stated.<\/p>\n

Addressing
\nthe leadership of GUTA in Accra yesterday on his second day tour of the Greater
\nAccra Region, the President said, \u201cPlease allow the work that the Trade
\nMinister and the Committee are doing with the Immigration Authorities to
\nprogress.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI
\nam confident that if we allow same to work, your issues with foreign participation
\nin the retail business will soon be a thing of the past in line with the law,\u201d
\nhe added.<\/p>\n

The
\nPresident assured the traders that his administration was working closely with
\nthe Bank of Ghana to find a lasting solution to the phenomenon of high interest
\nrates that affect businesses.<\/p>\n

He
\nalso commented on the issue of locked-up cash of traders in some insolvent
\nMicrofinance companies which were taken out of business following the banking
\nand financial sector reforms.<\/p>\n

He
\nasked the traders to be a little more patient with his government as it works
\nto clear all the debts owed them.<\/p>\n

Trade Minister<\/strong><\/p>\n

The
\nMinister for Trade and Industry, Alan K. Kyeremanten, commended the traders
\nhighly for receiving the President in such a rousing manner.<\/p>\n

He
\nsaid the traders were the backbone of the economy and could not be taken for
\ngranted, saying \u201csome people are out there to say all manner of things to get
\nyour minds twisted as far as the issues are concerned. Ignore them and keep
\nfaith with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo because in due course, things
\nwill take great shape.\u201d<\/p>\n

GUTA Position<\/strong><\/p>\n

GUTA
\nPresident Dr. Joseph Obeng reiterated that his members
\nwere only helping the government to enforce the law banning foreigners in the
\nretail business and were not there to cause mayhem.<\/p>\n

He said they would follow the law to ensure there is amicable solution for the issue and ensure that Ghanaian traders receive the needed protection.<\/p>\n
