Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, made the call in Ho, Volta Region on Monday when he opened a one-week Agricultural Fair as part of activities marking this year’s Farmers Day celebrations<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

Ghanaians have been urged to buy locally grown rice this Christmas, on other festive occasions and for everyday consumption in order to give greater impetus to the agriculture sector.<\/p>\n

Apart from saving the country millions of foreign exchange, increased patronage of locally grown rice would bolster production efforts, lead to increased investments, impact positively on the local economies of rice-growing areas and help achieve government\u2019s objective of ending the import of rice by 2024.<\/p>\n

Vice President\u00a0 Dr\u00a0Mahamudu Bawumia, made the call in Ho, Volta
\nRegion on Monday when he opened a\u00a0one-week\u00a0Agricultural Fair as part of
\nactivities marking this year\u2019s Farmers Day celebrations.<\/p>\n

\"Bawumia<\/figure>\n

\u201cWe are encouraging everybody to eat grown in Ghana rice. So for this
\n Christmas, as you go out to buy your rice, please make sure you are
\nbuying rice which is grown either in\u00a0Aveyime or\u00a0Bolgatanga\u00a0or\u00a0Tono\u00a0or
\nsomewhere in Ghana. Let\u2019s buy and eat made in Ghana rice,\u201d he urged.<\/p>\n

Vice President\u00a0Bawumia\u00a0reiterated the commitment of the Nana\u00a0Akufo-Addo\u00a0administration to the agriculture sector, evidenced by the implementation of policies and\u00a0programmes\u00a0such as the various modules under the Planting for Food and Jobs concept, as well as an increased supply of seeds,\u00a0fertilisers, farming implements and Agriculture Extension Officers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is obvious that since assuming the reigns of office, the government of President Nana Akufo-Addo\u00a0has been walking the talk of its promise to maximise the enormous potential of agriculture. This agenda is being aggressively pursued with the support and partnership of the private sector and the international community.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Bawumia<\/figure>\n

\u201cWe are doing a lot to modernise agriculture, improve productivity and to give agriculture the dignity that it deserves.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe effects of these policies and\u00a0programmes\u00a0are being seen today.
\nFor instance, for the past two years, through the success of the
\nPlanting for Food and Jobs\u00a0programme, we have stopped importing maize,
\nand we project that by 2024, we would have stopped the importation of
\nrice because of increased local production.\u201d<\/p>\n

Government, Vice President\u00a0Bawumia\u00a0indicated, is doing its part not only to increase the amount of irrigated publicly available land through the construction of major dams such as\u00a0Pwalugu\u00a0and expansion of the irrigation potential of the Bui Dam, and the One Village One Dam in the northern parts of the country, but is also investing in the fisheries sub-sector.<\/p>\n

\"Bawumia<\/figure>\n

\u201cWe have cut the sod for work to begin on 10 fish landing sites along the coast and a\u00a0Harbour\u00a0at James Town. Government, through the Coastal Development Authority, has also procured 5,000 Outboard Motors to be distributed to fishers next month,\u201d he disclosed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Vice President\u00a0Bawumia\u00a0urged players in the Agriculture sector to be abreast with changes in methods and the increasing introduction of technology into agriculture.<\/p>\n

He noted:\u00a0\u201cToday\u2019s agribusiness thrives on quick access to the latest, accurate and valuable information on new products, methods and systems of production as well as avenues for marketing of agricultural products.<\/p>\n

\"Bawumia<\/figure>\n

\u201cIf we consider that the future of accelerated growth of agriculture
\ndepends on these, there is a need for greater awareness of the potential
\n benefits that come with technology. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAlso important is the need for us to plan and coordinate our actions
\n on how we are going to make the best use of technology to expand
\nopportunities from access to inputs to disease control, farm management,
\n harvesting and marketing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The one week fair, which would showcase products from all 16 regions,
\n would bring together key stakeholders such as farmers, aggregators,
\nprocessors, input dealers, researchers, policymakers and implementers
\nand provide an opportunity for networking and knowledge sharing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
