With the advent and growth of Netflix, Hulu and other streaming<br \/>\nservices, most saw internet-connected televisions as a cord-cutter\u2019s dream. But<br \/>\nlike anything that connects to the internet, it opens up smart TVs to security<br \/>\nvulnerabilities and hackers. Not only that, many smart TVs come with a camera and<br \/>\na microphone. But as is the case with most other internet-connected devices,<br \/>\nmanufacturers often don\u2019t put security as a priority.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the key takeaway from the FBI\u2019s Portland field office,<br \/>\nwhich just ahead of some of the biggest shopping days of the year posted a<br \/>\nwarning\u00a0on its website\u00a0about the risks that smart TVs pose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeyond the risk that your TV manufacturer and app developers<br \/>\nmay be listening and watching you, that television can also be a gateway for<br \/>\nhackers to come into your home. A bad cyber actor may not be able to access<br \/>\nyour locked-down computer directly, but it is possible that your unsecured TV<br \/>\ncan give him or her an easy way in the backdoor through your router,\u201d<br \/>\nwrote the FBI.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI warned that hackers can take control of your unsecured<br \/>\nsmart TV and in worst cases, take control of the camera and microphone to watch<br \/>\nand listen in.<\/p>\n<p>Active attacks and exploits against smart TVs are rare, but not<br \/>\nunheard of. Because every smart TV comes with their manufacturer\u2019s own software<br \/>\nand are at the mercy of their often unreliable and irregular security patching<br \/>\nschedule, some devices are more vulnerable than others. Earlier this year,<br \/>\nhackers showed it was\u00a0possible to hijack\u00a0Google\u2019s Chromecast streaming stick<br \/>\nand broadcast random videos to thousands of victims.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, some of the biggest exploits targeting smart TVs in<br \/>\nrecent years were developed by the Central Intelligence Agency, but were<br \/>\nstolen. The files were later\u00a0published online\u00a0by WikiLeaks.<\/p>\n<p>But as much as the FBI\u2019s warning is responding to genuine fears,<br \/>\narguably one of the bigger issues that should cause as much if not greater<br \/>\nconcerns are how much tracking data is collected on smart TV owners.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post\u00a0earlier this year\u00a0found that some of the most popular<br \/>\nsmart TV makers \u2014 including Samsung and LG \u2014 collect tons of information about<br \/>\nwhat users are watching in order to help advertisers better target ads against<br \/>\ntheir viewers and to suggest what to watch next, for example. The TV tracking<br \/>\nproblem became so problematic a few years ago that smart TV maker Vizio\u00a0had to pay $2.2 million in fines\u00a0after it was caught<br \/>\nsecretly collecting customer viewing data. Earlier this year, a separate class<br \/>\naction suit related to the tracking again Vizio was\u00a0allowed\u00a0to go ahead.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI\u00a0recommends\u00a0placing black tape over an unused smart TV<br \/>\ncamera, keeping your smart TV up-to-date with the latest patches and fixes, and<br \/>\nto read the privacy policy to better understand what your smart TV is capable<br \/>\nof.<\/p>\n<p>As convenient as it might be, the most secure smart TV might be<br \/>\none that isn\u2019t connected to the internet at all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source: Yahoo<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>File photo: A smart TV If you just bought a smart TV on Black Friday or plan to buy one for Cyber Monday, the FBI wants you to know a few things.
