The
\nGhana Mine Workers\u2019 Union (GMWU), as part of their 75th<\/sup> anniversary,
\nhas honoured four more dignitaries for the significant roles they played in
\nshaping the mining sector of Ghana.<\/p>\n

The
\naward winners included Sir Sam Jonah, former Chief Executive Officer of Ashanti
\nGoldfields Company Limited, who set the pace for a fresh mining environment
\nwhere business and people issues were equally prioritised, and Prof. Akilakpa
\nSawyer, former Vice Chancellor, University of Ghana Legon, who exhibited a distinctive repository of knowledge
\nand wisdom during the preparation of the modern mining laws of Ghana.<\/p>\n

Others
\nwere Mr. Sam Poku, former Executive Director, Ghana Chamber of Mines, who
\nplayed a critical role in removing the hitherto adversarial union\/management
\nrelationship within the mining industry, and Mr. Kofi Ansah, Founding Chief
\nExecutive of Minerals Commission, whose pioneering role in shaping the mining
\nindustry laid a strong foundation for the growth and development of the Minerals
\nCommission.<\/p>\n

The General Secretary of GMWU, Prince William Ankrah, who
\nwelcomed the management, committee and entire membership of the union to the
\nawards ceremony, said four award winners in their various organisations left a
\nlasting legacy on the mining landscape through their work.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo
\ncommemorate this diamond jubilee, we have thought it wise to recognise and honour distinguished statesmen
\nand industry giants whose inestimable contributions have shaped the mining sector
\nof Ghana,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The
\nChief Director, Ministry of Lands & Natural Resources, Prof. Patrick
\nAgbesinyale, commended the management committee and the entire membership of
\nthe GMWU who have deemed it appropriate to recognise the doyens of the
\nindustry. <\/p>\n

He
\nsaid government appreciates the conducive environment created by the harmony
\namong the stakeholders and would work with the union as it has done in the past
\nto maintain the mutual beneficial relationship.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

Sir
\nSam Jonah, who spoke after the awards, said he was humbled to be part of a
\ngroup selected by the GMWU to be awarded. <\/p>\n

He, therefore, expressed his appreciation on behalf of the award winners for the recognition.<\/p>\n
