Accra, Nov 30, GNA \u2013
\nThe 71st Annual New Year School and Conference (ANYSC) slated for
\nJanuary 13-16, 2020, on the theme \u201cGhana Beyond Aid: Challenges and Prospects\u201d,
\nhas been launched in Accra.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ANYSC, which is
\nbeing organised by the School of Continuing and Distance Education (SCDE),
\nUniversity of Ghana, would be officially opened by President Nana Addo Dankwa
\nAkufo-Addo on January 14, 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n

The launch of the 71st
\nANSC was performed on behalf of the Senior Minister Mr Yaw Osafo Maafo by Madam
\nCatherine Afeku, a Minister of State at the Office of the President, assigned
\nto the Office of the Senior Minister.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a speech read on
\nhis behalf the senior minister said: \u201cThere is no ambiguity about the fact that
\nGhana is a resource-rich nation in a connected ecosystem to easily facilitate
\nany high profile development agenda.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAdded to this is
\nthe considerable endowment of human capital with the education, training,
\nskills and techniques to frontally drive our development agenda.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He noted that yet
\nthe best had so far not been achieved as far as development was concerned,
\nhence, a huge development gap compared to other societies with absolutely less
\nresources with whom Ghanaians started their respective nation building
\nprocesses.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we as
\nGhanaians apply this abundant human capital to effective use, harness these
\nresources well and deploy them creatively in a transparent manner, we all stand
\nthe chance to catalyse Ghana\u2019s economic development rapidly,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe sad story is
\nthat after 62 years of independence, Ghana is still seen as having great
\npotential to advance economically and yet not managed to do so with the speed
\nand the resolve expected.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He said aid had
\nplayed an important role in the nation\u2019s development; however, as a country,
\nthey need more than aid to expedite economic transformation to the desired
\nlevel.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said through
\nGhana Beyond Aid, they were seeking to find collectively, practical ways of
\nunleashing the embedded potential of the people of Ghana, so that they could
\ntogether become a \u201cprosperous and self-reliant nation that is in-charge of her
\neconomic destiny; a transformed Ghana that is prosperous enough to be beyond
\nneeding aid, and engages competitively with the rest of the world through trade
\nand investment\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGhana Beyond Aid
\nis, therefore, a national and non-partisan call to harness effectively our own
\nresources and deploy them efficiently for rapid economic and social
\ntransformation,\u201d the Senior Minister stated.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe should
\nvigorously maximize revenue generation from domestic sources and marshal forces
\nto clamp down on all forms of corruption. There is the need for a renewed
\nmindset and resolve to break the cycle of dependency, especially, through
\nmodernization of agriculture and accelerated industrialisation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He said Ghana Beyond
\nAid was not anti-aid or aid rejection; \u201cit is rather about being more efficient
\nand effective in how we mobilise and use our resources\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Michael
\nTagoe, Acting Provost of the College of Education, University of Ghana, said:
\n\u201cAs a nation, Ghana Beyond Aid will be meaningless or a mirage if we do not
\nchange our attitude towards work, corruption, protection of the environment and
\nmaintenance and preservation of national assets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to
\ninculcate in our children and the youth the spirit of patriotism and high
\nvalues and aspirations. We must all have a service mentality, and must be
\nwilling to serve our country in all aspects of endeavour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Prof Olivia Kwapong,
\nActing Dean, SCDE, University of Ghana, said: \u201cAs a nation one of the best
\nthings that could ever happen to us is to be self-sufficient and manage the
\nabundant resources that surround us to meet our needs (not wants) and even be
\nable to support other countries who are in need.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Nana Ato Arthur, the
\nHead of Local Government Service said for the country to be able to attain the
\nGhana Beyond Aid Agenda, there was the need to strengthen the local government
\nsystem, especially grass root democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n
