{"id":755242,"date":"2019-11-29T22:29:47","date_gmt":"2019-11-29T22:29:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/11\/29\/importers-kick-against-proposed-11-increment-in-cargo-handling-charges\/"},"modified":"2019-11-29T22:29:47","modified_gmt":"2019-11-29T22:29:47","slug":"importers-kick-against-proposed-11-increment-in-cargo-handling-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/11\/29\/importers-kick-against-proposed-11-increment-in-cargo-handling-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Importers kick against proposed 11% increment in cargo handling charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"513\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/image-346-696x513.png\"   alt=\"\" title=\"Asaki\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Importers and exporter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p> The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana has threatened to demonstrate against a proposed  11 percent tariff increment for cargo handling at the Terminal Three of  the Tema Port.<\/p>\n<p>The increment, which is to take effect next month, the importers argue, will increase the cost of shipping.<\/p>\n<p>The Meridian Port Services, operators of the new Terminal 3 at the Tema  Port, made a proposal to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) earlier  this year for an upward adjustment of tariffs on container handling due  to what it considers to be a fulfillment of an agreement in a contract  with GPHA.<\/p>\n<p>But  Executive Secretary of the Association, Sampson Asaki Awingobit on Asempa FM\u2019s <strong>Ekosii Sen<\/strong> programme Friday said a new charge will collapse their business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are strongly opposed to the tariff adjustment which will also affect  export cargoes, considering the fact that exports are cost sensitive and for that, attempts to increase tariffs will make the country\u2019s ports  unattractive which will impact negatively on government\u2019s new port  strategy,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ ALSO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though there has been stakeholder engagements since MPS announced its intention to increase the cargo handling charges, Mr  Awingobit said importers did not give their approval.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is illogical for shippers to pay for potential investments, since they will be made to pay for those same facilities in the nearest  future,\u201d he fumed.<\/p>\n<p>Mr  Awingobit is convinced the move endorsed by the GPHA is a scam and a dubious means to tax shippers.<\/p>\n<p>He added that they would demonstrate against authorities if the  government went ahead to implement the increment. <\/p>\n<p>Source: Ghana|Adomonline.com|Adwoa Gyasiwaa Agyeman<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Importers and exporter The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana has threatened to demonstrate against a proposed 11 percent tariff increment for cargo handling at the Terminal Three of the Tema Port.
