Hannah Owusu Koranteng<\/strong><\/p>\nThe Wassa Association of Communities
\nAffected by Mining (WACAM), a civil society group, has called for a review of
\nthe current mining law to include provisions that empower women in the sector.<\/p>\n
According to the association, the
\ncurrent laws lack provisions that specifically target the empowerment of women
\nwho dominate in the mining value chain.<\/p>\n
The group thus called for the
\nintegration of gender equity in mining laws to ensure women have due rights and
\nbenefits in the sector while having equal opportunity to participate in
\ndecision-making.<\/p>\n
The Executive Director of WACAM, Hannah
\nOwusu Koranteng, in her opening remarks, said a number of research conducted by
\nthe association and other bodies had shown that only three per cent of women in
\nthe mining sector receive compensation.<\/p>\n
She said it was important for all
\nstakeholders to support the review of the mining laws and make them gender
\nsensitive.<\/p>\n
\u201cWomen are human beings and need to have
\nrights in the mining sector since they are part of the vulnerable groups that
\nbear the brunt of mining activities,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The Executive Director of Centre of
\nPublic Interest Law, Augustine Niber, observed that the current laws had failed
\nto protect women in the mining sector.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Minerals and Mining Act 2006 (Act
\n703) and all the regulations enacted for implementation are gender neutral and
\ndid take the issue of women particularly into contemplation. Indeed, there is
\nno mention of the word \u201cgender\u201d or \u201cwoman\u201d anywhere in Act 703,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
He, therefore, suggested the need for
\nthe formulation of policies and the amendment of existing laws and regulations
\nto address women\u2019s access, control and ownership of extractive resources,
\naccess to essential services, compensation rights, productive employment and
\ndecent work, participation in decision-making, among others.<\/p>\n
Dr. Emmanuel Tenkorang, Dean for School
\nof Development Studies, University of Cape Coast, said the sexually
\nexploitative nature of the male dominated sector also exposed women in most
\nmining communities to prostitution, single parenting, teenage pregnancy,
\nSexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), drug abuse, among other social vices.<\/p>\n
He reiterated the need to protect women\u2019s right in the mining sector as they tend to suffer most from health and environmental issues borne out of mining activities.<\/p>\n
