{"id":753966,"date":"2019-11-28T12:20:50","date_gmt":"2019-11-28T12:20:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/11\/28\/opportunity-international-empowers-women\/"},"modified":"2019-11-28T12:20:50","modified_gmt":"2019-11-28T12:20:50","slug":"opportunity-international-empowers-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/11\/28\/opportunity-international-empowers-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Opportunity International Empowers Women &#8211;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p> <strong><em>Participants at the workshop<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>OPPORTUNITY<br \/>\nINTERNATIONAL (United Kingdom) recently held its annual stakeholders\u2019 meeting<br \/>\nin Accra on \u201cEconomic Empowerment of Women in Ghana and Democratic<br \/>\nRepublic of Congo through rural financing\u201d supported by UK Aid Match. <\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nmaiden meeting was attended by all the project stakeholders, including<br \/>\nOpportunity International UK, Sinapi Aba Savings and Loans (SASL), Vision Fund<br \/>\n\u2013 Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Esoko, Participatory Development<br \/>\nAssociates (PDA), Warehousing Consultants and Opportunity International Savings<br \/>\nand Loans (OISL). <\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\noverall objective of \u2018The Economic Empowerment of Women Project\u2019 is to help<br \/>\nincrease the participation and empowerment of 12,000 women in the rural<br \/>\neconomies of Ghana and the DRC in order to improve productivity, build assets<br \/>\nand increase household income. <\/p>\n<p>Chief<br \/>\nExecutive Officer of Opportunity International Savings and Loans, Kwame<br \/>\nOwusu-Boateng, in his opening remarks commended the stakeholders for exceeding<br \/>\nall the targets set for the first year of the project. <\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nsaid \u201cinstitutions that stood the test of time are those who are client centric<br \/>\nand also by empowering women, we will help to create a lasting impact in our<br \/>\nsociety.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>So<br \/>\nfar, over 5,032 female smallholder farmers and agricultural business owners in<br \/>\nGhana and DRC representing 42% of the total target of 12,000 have been served<br \/>\nwith loans, savings, and training with total loan disbursement of over \u00a3700,000<br \/>\nto support their agri- businesses. <\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nimpact of \u2018The Economic Empowerment of Women\u2019 are already being seen as one<br \/>\nclient\u2019s daughter, Mahama Nimaku, indicated \u201cbefore getting this loan my mother<br \/>\nwas always torn between giving me my school fees and buying quality seeds and<br \/>\nfertiliser.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It<br \/>\nis expected that, at the end of the three year period, 32,000 family members<br \/>\nwill also benefit from better nutrition, health and education; 50,000 to<br \/>\nbenefit from a community-wide financial literacy and gender campaign and 10,000<br \/>\njobs will be created. <\/p>\n<p>Opportunity<br \/>\nInternational is one of the world\u2019s leading microfinance organisations.
