Alan Kyerematen<\/strong><\/p>\nThe failure by the then
\nMahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to ensure the Komenda
\nSugar Factory in the Central Region became functional is coming back to haunt
\nthem.<\/p>\n
The factory, which has been in existence since
\nOsagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah\u2019s time, was refurbished at a cost of $35 million
\nfrom an Indian Exim Bank facility and was inaugurated by Mr. Mahama in May
\n2016.<\/p>\n
Immediately a test run was conducted, the
\nfactory, with a capacity to crush 1,250 tonnes of sugarcane per day, was shut
\ndown to the amazement of the public.<\/p>\n
It later turned out that there was no raw
\nmaterial to feed the factory and it had been done for purposes of political
\nexpediency when Mr. Mahama was running around the country for his second term
\nbid that never was.<\/p>\n
When Nana Akufo-Addo became President, he
\npromised to bring the factory back to life and tasked the Ministry of Trade and
\nIndustry to find a strategic investor to revive the \u201cdebt-ridden and idle\u201d
\nfactory.<\/p>\n
The government on Tuesday finally handed over
\nthe Komenda Sugar Factory to a Strategic Investor called Park Aggrotech Company
\nLimited, an Indian company based in Ghana and a subsidiary of the Skylark Group
\nof companies, which won the bid to manage the factory.<\/p>\n
The Paramount Chief of Komenda Traditional
\nArea, Nana Kojo Kru II, said on radio yesterday that he never saw and tasted
\nsamples of the Komenda sugar that the NDC claimed it produced.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t see any sugar, whether blue or white.
\nThey didn\u2019t bring some to my palace and up to date, I don\u2019t understand why I
\nwasn\u2019t shown just a sample of that so-called sugar,\u201d he said on Kasapa FM in
\nAccra and added sarcastically that \u201cMaybe that wasn\u2019t a wholesome sugar for
\nconsumption.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a rebuttal, a former board secretary of the Komenda
\nSugar Factory, Ransford Chatman Vanni-Amoah reacted, saying he is \u2018scandalized\u2019
\nby the chief\u2019s comment.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen the factory was commissioned on May 30,
\n2016, there was a test run. At the time, we didn\u2019t have any MD, but there was
\nwhat we called the Komenda Sugar Project Management Board. Eleven members sat
\non the board including Nana Kojo Kru II. The sugar that was produced during the
\ntest run, every member of the Board, I quite remember, was given some of the
\nsugar produced. So it comes to me as a surprise if Nana will today say on radio
\nthat he never saw samples of the Komenda sugar,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Yesterday, the deputy Minister of Trade and
\nIndustry, Kingsley Carlos Ahenkorah, explained the extent of rot perpetrated by
\nthe NDC at the factory.<\/p>\n
He said that the Mahama government paid two million
\nUS dollars to an out-grower who never supplied the sugarcane for the factory to
\nwork.<\/p>\n
He said there were procurement infractions
\nduring the setting up of the facility and EOCO was working on the case.<\/p>\n
He assured that the Akufo-Addo government was
\ndetermined to make the factory produce sugar.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
