{"id":752473,"date":"2019-11-26T15:24:45","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T15:24:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/11\/26\/deprived-vakpo-sech-tech-now-a-top-school\/"},"modified":"2019-11-26T15:24:45","modified_gmt":"2019-11-26T15:24:45","slug":"deprived-vakpo-sech-tech-now-a-top-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/11\/26\/deprived-vakpo-sech-tech-now-a-top-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Deprived Vakpo Sech Tech Now A Top School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>T<strong>he Boys Dormitory<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vakpo Senior High Technical School (SHTS), an underprivileged<br \/>\nsecond cycle institution in the North Dayi District of the Volta Region that<br \/>\ncould only admit about 247 students, now has facilities that make it possible<br \/>\nfor the admission of over 1000 students.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Headmistress of the school, Vivienne Akosua Dzifa Sessi, said,<br \/>\n\u201cThis transformation which happened in less than three years has been made<br \/>\npossible by the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy introduced in 2017 to<br \/>\nincrease access to secondary education across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said that although the school was not where it wanted to be,<br \/>\nits current situation was much better\u00a0<br \/>\nthan where it used to be three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>A visit to the school by <strong><em>DAILY GUIDE<\/em><\/strong> in 2016 showed that the technical<br \/>\nschool, which now has 83 staff members, prior to the introduction of Free SHS,<br \/>\nwas unattractive, had fewer staff members, lacked student placements and was<br \/>\nwoefully under resourced to the point that some of the students had to sleep in<br \/>\nclassrooms.<\/p>\n<p>The school began in 1975 as a continuation school and it underwent<br \/>\nseveral changes and educational reforms before it became a secondary technical<br \/>\nschool in 1991. As of the 2015\/2016 academic year, the school had 247 students.<br \/>\nThis number shot up to 336 in the 2016\/17 academic year, and increased to 616<br \/>\nin the 2017\/2018 academic year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 2018\/2019 academic year saw an increment of 751 students,<br \/>\nwhile the current 2019\/2020 academic year has a student population of 1062<br \/>\nstudents, representing a percentage rise of 330% from 2017 to date.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The increase in population has been matched with the construction<br \/>\nof a new kitchen, additional classrooms and dormitories, mechanized boreholes<br \/>\nwith the latest project being a one-storey 12-unit classroom block and a<br \/>\n400-bed capacity boys\u2019 dormitory to complement the existing girls\u2019 dormitory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to Madam Sessi, the school would soon add Science to the<br \/>\nsix courses already being taught, namely Technical Science, Visual Arts, Home<br \/>\nScience, Business, General Arts and Agric Science.<\/p>\n<p>She was optimistic that the provision of a school bus, an<br \/>\nadministration block, an assembly\/dining hall and a fence wall would go a long<br \/>\nway to improve performance.
