{"id":752285,"date":"2019-11-26T11:36:31","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T11:36:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/11\/26\/gh%c2%a2528-budgeted-to-tackle-flooding\/"},"modified":"2019-11-26T11:36:31","modified_gmt":"2019-11-26T11:36:31","slug":"gh%c2%a2528-budgeted-to-tackle-flooding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/11\/26\/gh%c2%a2528-budgeted-to-tackle-flooding\/","title":{"rendered":"GH\u00a2528 Budgeted To Tackle Flooding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p> <strong>Samuel Atta Akyea <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nMinister of Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea, has said in Parliament that his<br \/>\nministry has budgeted GH\u00a2528 million to tackle perennial flooding in the<br \/>\ncapital city, Accra, and other regional capitals.<\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nsaid the money would be used for major desilting,<br \/>\nconcrete lining of most overbridge drains and construction of bigger drain storms<br \/>\nto help ameliorate flooding in the cities and bigger towns in the country. <\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nminister who said this in his contribution to the 2020 budget debate in Parliament<br \/>\nyesterday said\u00a0 the government had also<br \/>\nspent\u00a0 an amount of GH\u00a2597<br \/>\nmillion to build a sea defence wall and also protect coastal communities<br \/>\nvulnerable to flooding from high tidal waves. <\/p>\n<p>On<br \/>\nhousing, the minister said the government, through the ministry, was very much<br \/>\ncommitted to providing affordable housing units to lower class and middle class<br \/>\nresidents of the country, stressing that the ministry had started a serious redevelopment<br \/>\nof the Roman Ridge area in Accra where 444 housing units comprising 198<br \/>\nexecutive houses and 246 three-bedroom houses would be provided for the working<br \/>\nclass in the society.<\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nsaid apart from that, the ministry would complete all the abandoned affordable<br \/>\nhousing units across the country which would be cheaper for the ordinary<br \/>\nGhanaian.<\/p>\n<p>According<br \/>\nto the Works and Housing Minister, the Seglemi Housing Project started by the<br \/>\nprevious National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration would also be<br \/>\ncompleted in due course, but the ministry is awaiting an audit report on the<br \/>\nprojects since there were some challenges with regard to the cost of the<br \/>\nproject so that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) can complete that housing project.<\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nsaid on a larger scale, the government is calling for partnership with the<br \/>\nprivate sector to help build more houses to reduce the country\u2019s housing<br \/>\ndeficit of two million.<\/p>\n<p>According<br \/>\nto him, government had also started 200 housing unit projects for the officers<br \/>\nand men of the Police Service at Tesano in Accra and were at various stages of<br \/>\ncompletion.<\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nsaid the housing sector had seriously been affected by the huge arrears of GH\u00a233<br \/>\nbillion bequeathed to the NPP government as a result of the mismanagement of<br \/>\nthe economy by the previous NDC government.<\/p>\n<p>The Ranking Member of Works and Housing Committee of Parliament and NDC MP for Ho West, Emmanuel Bedzrah, said the NPP government does not have any policy direction for the Ministry of Works and Housing, stressing that the only positive policy by the government was in the 2019 Budget Statement which the government said the State Housing Company would be collaborating with some private developers to construct 200,000 housing units for Ghanaians but to date not a single housing unit has been delivered by the government.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>By Thomas Fosu Jnr<\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Samuel Atta Akyea The Minister of Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea, has said in Parliament that his ministry has budgeted GH\u00a2528 million to tackle perennial flooding in the capital city, Accra, and other regional capitals.
