The Wildlife Unit of the Forestry
\nCommission has cautioned communities within the Eastern Corridor to be on the
\nlookout for an imminent elephant invasion, saying the huge animals will soon
\nmove out for food and water because of the dry season.<\/p>\n
The animals are sometimes seen
\nduring the dry season in the Nabdam, Talensi and Bawku West districts of the
\nUpper East Region, which are part of the Eastern Wildlife Corridor, where they
\ndestroy farmlands.<\/p>\n
\u201cDry season is approaching and we
\nare going to get the elephants more permanent here because as you move further
\nup the Red Volta Valley, the weather becomes drier,\u201d Alfred Kofi Bara, the
\nWildlife Officer in charge of the Eastern Corridor Wildlife of the Forestry
\nCommission, said.<\/p>\n
He said the elephants used to
\nmigrate from the Western Wildlife Corridor which covers Builsa and the
\nKassena-Nankana areas, \u201cbut for some time now, they seem to be more resident in
\nthe Eastern Wildlife Corridor.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Eastern Wildlife Corridor covers
\nabout eight political districts stretching from the Bongo District through
\nNabdam, Talensi, Bawku West, Binduri, Garu, Tempane and the East Mamprusi districts.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs you move down the Red Volta
\ntowards the White Volta, we have more permanent pools of water during the dry
\nseason that attracts them here. We also have much more luxuriant vegetation, so
\napparently they turn to stay here more,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mr. Bara added \u201cthe elephant is a
\nvery intelligent animal and has good sense of smell, sense of hearing, but poor
\neye sight so any colour that improves its vision is a threat to you the person
\nwith the colour.\u201d<\/p>\n
He appealed to the public not to
\nget close to the elephants, saying \u201cwe should avoid watching them when dressed
\nin bright colours like yellow, red and white or any colour that is bright
\nenough to improve their vision.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are appealing to all
\nstakeholders to support Wildlife control, especially any invasion of elephants
\nbecause we alone cannot do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr. Bara said his outfit was trying
\nits best to sensitize communities to how to take precautionary measures when
\nthe animals are on sight.<\/p>\n
