{"id":749056,"date":"2019-11-21T12:47:55","date_gmt":"2019-11-21T12:47:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/11\/21\/bumper-fish-harvest-in-the-offing-deputy-minister\/"},"modified":"2019-11-21T12:47:55","modified_gmt":"2019-11-21T12:47:55","slug":"bumper-fish-harvest-in-the-offing-deputy-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/11\/21\/bumper-fish-harvest-in-the-offing-deputy-minister\/","title":{"rendered":"Bumper Fish Harvest In The Offing &#8211; Deputy Minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Elizabeth Afoley Quaye<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nDeputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and New Patriotic Party (NPP)<br \/>\nMember of Parliament (MP) for Ekumfi, Francis Ato Cudjoe, has promised bumper<br \/>\nproduction of fish in the coming seasons as a result of pragmatic policies put<br \/>\nin place by the government to boost the fisheries industry.<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\ndeputy minister said after taking over the reins of government, the NPP<br \/>\ngovernment had withdrawn the licences of about 34 trawlers whose activities on<br \/>\nhigh seas were contributing to the diminishing stock of fishes in Ghana\u2019s<br \/>\nwaters.<\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nsaid the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government allowed the<br \/>\nwholesale registration of trawlers to fish in our waters with 104 trawlers<br \/>\nbeing registered but when the NPP took over power it has reduced the number to<br \/>\n74 by freezing the licences of 30 vessels.<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\ndeputy minister who was contributing to the debate on the 2020 Budget in Parliament<br \/>\nannounced that from December 2017, there had not been any<br \/>\ndiversion of pre-mix fuel which was rampant in the era of the NDC government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr.<br \/>\nSpeaker, in 2016 under the NDC, there were 267 trucks of pre-mix fuel diverted<br \/>\nbut from December 2017 up to now there has not been any single diversion of<br \/>\npre-mix fuel,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nadmitted that during the first year of the NPP government under Nana Akufo-Addo<br \/>\nthere were still challenges with fuel diversion until the government found an<br \/>\nantidote to it.<\/p>\n<p>Besides,<br \/>\nhe said that from December 2019, the ministry would introduce the Canoe<br \/>\nCertification Card to avoid the exploitation of the fishes.<\/p>\n<p>According<br \/>\nto him, through the certification card exercise, all canoes would be registered<br \/>\nand given cards to operate in Ghana\u2019s waters and any canoe without such a card<br \/>\nwould not be allowed to fish in the sea.<\/p>\n<p>Contributing<br \/>\nto the debate, the ranking member on the Health Committee and the NDC MP for<br \/>\nJuaboso, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, said that as a result of the capping of the<br \/>\nNational Health Insurance Fund (NHIS) by the NPP government, the NHIS is<br \/>\nindebted to many service providers.<\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nsaid the capping had taken away a whopping GH\u00a2833 million from the fund.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the NPP government to immediately release funds to complete all hospital facilities that were started by the previous NDC government but had been abandoned since the government took over power in January 2017.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By Thomas Fosu Jnr <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Elizabeth Afoley Quaye The Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ekumfi, Francis Ato Cudjoe, has promised bumper production of fish in the coming seasons as a result of pragmatic policies put in place by the government to boost the fisheries industry.
