The Savannah Regional Minister, Salifu Adam Braimah, has visited
\nvictims of a submerged ferry at Makango Volta Lake in the East Gonja District
\nof the Savannah Region.<\/p>\n

Some days ago, the ferry called Nana Besemuna, which was travelling
\non the lake to Makango with passengers, yams and other farm produce loaded on
\ntrucks, submerged.<\/p>\n

DAILY GUIDE<\/em><\/strong>
\ngathered that the submerged ferry is about 50 years old and most of the wooded
\npanels in the ferry had decomposed but fortunately no life was lost in the
\naccident.<\/p>\n

During the minister\u2019s visit, workers of the ferry managed to pull out the trucks but almost everything had been destroyed by the water.<\/p>\n

Some engines of the trucks were also damaged as a result of the
\nsubmerging of the ferry.<\/p>\n

Residents who use the ferry as their means of transport urged the
\ngovernment to get them a new ferry.<\/p>\n

Naval Captain Akabutu told DAILY GUIDE<\/em><\/strong> that they had brought in
\nmachines to pump out the water from the tanks to be able to pull the ferry out
\nof the lake.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have come with a diving company; they have come with some
\nballoons which will be inserted alongside the ferry and as they pump the ferry
\nwill move up,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

According to him, the \u2018Queen\u2019 vessel which is stationed at Akosombo
\nis expected to arrive at Makango on Wednesday to assist passengers to cross
\nover to the other side of the lake.<\/p>\n

He also said the Jakpa ferry would ply the Yeji-Makango Lake
\npermanently to manage the situation.<\/p>\n

The minister later called on the Volta Lake Transport management to
\nfrequently maintain the ferries to avoid similar situations in the future, and
\nadded that there were plans to construct a bridge on that side of the lake to
\nmake travelling more convenient.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are in talks with a Chinese company to construct a 7-kilometre
\nbridge across the lake, so we will take it up to Cabinet,\u201d he assured.<\/p>\n
