Mahama<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A pathologist who examined the remains of Major<br \/>\nMaxwell Mahama yesterday gave a harrowing account of how the soldier died as he<br \/>\npresented an autopsy report to an Accra High Court.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lawrence Edusei of the Korle Bu Teaching<br \/>\nHospital told the court how pellets were found in some parts of the body of the<br \/>\nfallen soldier, who was lynched by an angry mob at Denkyira Obuasi (now New<br \/>\nObuasi) in the Central Region.<\/p>\n<p>Besides, the doctor told the court how the<br \/>\ndeceased had multiple burns on parts of the body, covering about 54 per cent of<br \/>\nthe total body surface.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the pellets and burns, the court<br \/>\nalso heard that the body was inflicted with multiple cuts, including fractured<br \/>\nchest bones.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor told the court that the cause of<br \/>\ndeath was as a result of multiple head injuries due to blunt object and<br \/>\nshotguns which he said were \u2018unnatural cause of death.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Death<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Major Maxwell Mahama was on a 20-kilometre walk<br \/>\nwhen he was reportedly mistaken for an armed robber by some women from whom he<br \/>\nhad stopped to buy some snails.<\/p>\n<p>The women, who thought he was an armed robber<br \/>\nafter spotting his official pistol, reportedly called the assemblyman for the<br \/>\narea to raise the alarm.<\/p>\n<p>The assemblyman allegedly organised people in<br \/>\nthe town to lynch the soldier and later burnt parts of his body.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 14 persons are currently before an<br \/>\nAccra High Court charged with abetment and murder of the young soldier.<\/p>\n<p>They have pleaded not guilty to the charges and<br \/>\nthe pathologist is the 13<sup>th <\/sup>prosecution witness in the case.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Autopsy<br \/>\nReport<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, led in his evidence by Chief State<br \/>\nAttorney Evelyn Keelson, the pathologist told the court that he had performed both<br \/>\nexternal and internal examinations on the body.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the external examinations<br \/>\nrevealed marks of violence which included burns involving the head, both upper<br \/>\nlimbs, both lower limbs, and the abdomen.<\/p>\n<p>The internal examinations, he said, revealed bleedings<br \/>\nin the brain, while there were also \u201cextensive bleedings on the surface of the<br \/>\nlungs and a penetrating injury of the left lung.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was extensive bleeding in the left upper<br \/>\nhalf of the abdomen. The rest of the systems were essentially normal,\u201d Dr. Edusei<br \/>\ntold the court further.<\/p>\n<p><strong>X-ray<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The doctor also stated that he conducted an<br \/>\nX-ray on the body prior to the autopsy to help identify where the bullets<br \/>\nentered the body.<\/p>\n<p>He said the X-ray \u201crevealed pellets lodged on<br \/>\nthe left side of the jaw, the lower end of the right thigh bone and the lower<br \/>\npart of the left leg. There was an object lodged at the right side of the<br \/>\npelvic bone that had caused a fracture. I did mention that it was difficult to<br \/>\ndetermine what this object was but it is mostly likely to be from a shotgun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cross<br \/>\nExamination<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>George Bernard Shaw, who is representing five<br \/>\nof the accused persons during cross-examination, asked him whether it was best<br \/>\npractice to conduct the autopsy without the proper contribution of the crime<br \/>\nscene experts and ballistic experts. <\/p>\n<p>Dr. Edusei responded that he got adequate information from the police but for the ballistic expert \u201chis work is totally different from mine and I don\u2019t need his contribution to arrive at my conclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>BY Gibril Abdul Razak<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The late Maj.
