\nCharles Komi Kudzordzi, aka Papavi Kudzordzi, is on the run as security agents
\ngo after him following his so-called declaration on Saturday of independence of
\nan imaginary country called Western Togoland.<\/p>\n
Technically on bail
\nafter he was arrested earlier, alongside other members of his political
\ngrouping, the Homeland Study Group, Papavi made an appearance before a judge
\nbefore being granted bail. <\/p>\n
Last Saturday, many
\nmembers of his group and others sympathetic to his cause joined him at a spot
\nnot far away from the Police Training School in Ho, where he declared a
\nbreakaway from the Volta Region, North West and some parts of the Upper East
\nRegion.<\/p>\n
Soon after declaring
\na breakaway of \u2018Western Togoland\u2019, an act which is considered a treasonable
\nfelony and carries a maximum sentence when convicted, he was whisked away in a
\nwaiting car. <\/p>\n
Not even those who
\nwatched him make the daring declaration knew his destination as the car sped
\noff. <\/p>\n
Security agents from
\nthe Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and the national security apparatus
\nhave not yet located his whereabouts. <\/p>\n
It is believed that
\nhe is hiding in nearby Togo or somewhere within the part of the country he
\nclaims is part of his imaginary Western Togoland. <\/p>\n
The silence which
\nfollowed his declaration of independence prompted questions as to whether the act
\nof treasonable felony was going to be responded to at all. <\/p>\n
DAILY
\nGUIDE<\/em>
\nis unable to confirm whether or not some of the secessionist followers have
\nbeen arrested or not. Under such treasonable circumstances, other members of
\nthe seceding group are susceptible to arrests.<\/p>\nConsidering the
\ngravity of the criminality of secession, many have asked why members of the
\nHomeland Group were able to get away so easily without the security agents
\nswooping over them, especially during the declaration of independence. <\/p>\n
Government
\nResponse<\/strong><\/p>\nA statement from the
\nInformation Ministry when it landed eventually left nobody in doubt that the
\nleader of the secession and his gang were under the radar of the national
\nsecurity apparatus. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe Government of
\nGhana takes note of a group known as the Homeland Study Foundation, purporting
\nto declare secession from Ghana,\u201d Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said
\nin a statement. <\/p>\n
This is the first
\nreaction in writing from the government since the secession bid of the gang
\nreached a crescendo, with the declaration of independence and an announcement
\nof proceeding to seek recognition from the United Nations.<\/p>\n
He has also said he
\nis forming a government to push for their demands.<\/p>\n
Ghanaians have been
\nasked by government \u201cto disregard the claims by the group; the general public
\nis hereby informed that state security agencies are taking the necessary
\nmeasures to ensure that persons involved with the illegal act are dealt with in
\naccordance with the law.<\/p>\n
\u201cGhana government has
\ngiven an assurance that it has not ceded any part of its territory to anybody,
\nperson or a group of persons,\u201d the statement went on.<\/p>\n
As if the
\nindependence declaration was not enough, the octogenarian has claimed that the
\nAkosombo Dam belongs to the non-existent \u2018Western Togoland\u2019 and was coming for
\nit.<\/p>\n
The leader of the
\nsecessionists and a few of his followers are no strangers to the cells of the
\nBNI, having been arrested earlier and flown to Accra when their activities
\nattracted the national security apparatus. <\/p>\n
Soon after the
\ngovernment announcement asking Ghanaians to disregard the so-called
\nindependence declaration, the group has reportedly dared the state from an
\nunknown location. <\/p>\n
History <\/strong><\/p>\nToday\u2019s Volta Region and a part of the
\nNorthern Region are not new to territorial controversies. On 9th May 1956, in
\nthe twilight of colonial rule in the Gold Coast, a referendum was held on the
\nstatus of what was then called British Togoland.<\/p>\n
The referendum offered
\nthe people the choice of remaining a Trust Territory until French Togoland
\ndecided which direction it wanted to go, part of the new
\nGhana or otherwise. <\/p>\n
The Togoland Congress
\ncampaigned for amalgamation with French Togoland. The referendum results showed
\nthat 63.9 per cent favoured being with Ghana and the others, French Togoland.<\/p>\n
Octogenarian Charles Komi Kudzordzi is part of those who opposed the amalgamation as he continuously regards the amalgamation with Ghana an illegality, something which is common to his Western Togoland speeches. <\/p>\n
