The secession project of some separatists in the Volta Region has
\nprogressed to a disturbing notch as their octogenarian leader Charles Komi Kudzordzi,
\nalias Papavi Hogbedetor, declares independence of Western Togoland.<\/p>\n
His recent brush with the law during which he was detained for a
\nwhile after his secessionist activities came under the radar of the national
\nsecurity apparatus has not impacted his provocative bid.<\/p>\n
After the rather \u2018phony\u2019 declaration of independence from Ghana, his
\nHomeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF) has been championing their cause of
\nannouncing their intention of seeking recognition from the United Nations.<\/p>\n
They have also claimed they are in the process of selecting their
\nministers of state.<\/p>\n
The octogenarian dared the security agencies, as it were, when he
\ncommitted the criminal act of declaring independence in the Volta Regional
\ncapital of Ho last Saturday. <\/p>\n
He left followers of Ghana\u2019s early post-independence history when
\nduring the declaration he traced in Ewe, the chequered history of the Volta
\nRegion from its status as a German protectorate, joined to the Gold Coast for
\nthe formation of the independent Ghana in 1957 after a plebiscite.<\/p>\n
The political journey for him was fraught with illegalities,
\nsomething he did not hide from his speech.<\/p>\n
Inciting Mission <\/strong><\/p>\nThe octogenarian appeared primed for the occasion as he went about
\ninciting his audience and indeed the people of Volta Region against the
\ngovernment.<\/p>\n
The recent budget statement of government, he told his audience,
\nomitted the Volta Region, saying \u201cwe\u2019ve all witnessed what happened recently
\nwhen we (Volta Region) were forgotten by the government in its budget. Can a
\nparent forget about their children? We\u2019re not their children, so they have
\nforgotten about us.\u201d<\/p>\n
From midnight <\/strong><\/p>\n\u201cFrom midnight of November 16, 2019 entering into Sunday, November
\n17, 2019, we\u2019re now Western Togoland state,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
There was an expected jubilation from the ecstatic crowd which
\nlistened to him after which they danced to the borborbor, a traditional Ewe act.\n<\/p>\n
Even before the import of his action could be digested by observers
\nclose to the scene in the general area of a Police Training School in Ho, he
\nhas moved away from the scene in a vehicle, an action which bore the traits of
\na well rehearsed project.<\/p>\n
Should they be arrested that would be the third time that they would
\nbe picked up for seeking secession from Ghana.<\/p>\n
To underscore their seriousness, they have announced the creation of
\nstructures to run the \u2018newly independent country.\u2019<\/p>\n
The \u2018breakaway country\u2019 has created the various attributes of
\nsovereign countries such as currency which is called Volts, Coat of Arms and
\nnow preparing to appoint ministers.<\/p>\n
As of press time, there was no word from the security agencies considering the fact that the act being a treasonable felony should have had the actors arrested already.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
