Kumasi, Nov. 18, GNA – A three-day exercise
\nto enforce voluntary payment of the one per cent Tourism Levy, has begun in the
\nAshanti Region.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is also to promote quality standards,
\nsafety and security in the tourism industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Levy, stipulated in the Tourism Act 817
\nof 2011, is meant to provide the requisite resources for sustainable
\ndevelopment of the tourism industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Prince Yaw Essah, Administrator of the
\nTourism Development Fund, said the exercise was to ensure strict compliance in
\nthe payment of the Levy.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is also meant to recover arrears owed by
\nfacility operators to put GTA in a better position to market and promote
\nGhana’s tourist resources.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Essah in an interview with the Ghana News
\nAgency (GNA), urged stakeholders, especially key players in the tourism
\nindustry to strive to do the right thing.<\/span><\/p>\n

This was because the Levy paid by users of
\ntourism establishments or units in the form of indirect tax was ultimately to
\nthe benefit of the nation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Administrator said the exercise would
\nsee the taskforce visiting more than 50 tourism facilities in the Region, to
\nverify how they were complying with the payment of the Levy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Ekow Sampson, Deputy Chief Executive
\nOfficer in-charge of Operations, GTA, indicated that tourism had huge
\npotentials, which could be tapped for job and wealth creation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stakeholders should, therefore, be
\nsupportive of the work of the GTA in the interest of all and sundry.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first day of the exercise saw the
\nclosure of Hotel La Sab and Abeh Cabayaro Hotel, all in Kumasi, for defaulting
\nin the payment of the Levy for a number of years.<\/span><\/p>\n
