At the end of their annual plenary in Elmina in the Central Region,
\nCatholic Bishops have commended government for introducing the Free Senior High
\nSchool (Free SHS) programme, but noted that there were challenges that demanded
\nattention. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe, therefore, call for a broad national dialogue of relevant
\nstakeholders\u2019 review of all aspects of the Free SHS and the challenges
\nassociated with the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS)
\nto find the best way forward for our nation,\u201d they said in a statement they
\nissued at the end of the conference.<\/p>\n
The bishops re-echoed President Akufo-Addo\u2019s assurance that \u201cComprehensive
\nSexuality Education (CSE) will not see the light of day under his government,\u201d
\nadding that the uproar that greeted the controversial subject was indicative of
\nwhat should be expected when an externally imposed policy is accepted without
\nadequate engagement with the citizens who would be affected by it. <\/p>\n
They advised the President against a future re-introduction of the
\nsubject in any form or guise in our school curriculum. <\/p>\n
Security<\/strong><\/p>\nThe bishops urged the managers of security of the state to up their
\nperformance. Their call was hinged on the kidnapping of the Takoradi girls and
\nother murderous incidents in the country. <\/p>\n
Political Parties <\/strong><\/p>\nThe Catholic clergy were not happy with the interference in security
\nmatters by political parties; they observed that such a situation makes security
\npersonnel ineffective. <\/p>\n
Economic Growth, Poverty<\/strong><\/p>\nThey stated that \u201cthe government deserves commendation for the
\nsuccessful completion of economic reforms under the IMF-sponsored Extended Credit
\nFacility (ECF) programme.\u201d<\/p>\n
They noted that the reforms had put the economy on the path of
\nsustainable growth, saying \u201ctoday broad economic indicators are pointing in the
\nright direction. Our economic growth rate is reputed to be one of the highest
\nin the world, and inflation is down to single digits.\u201d<\/p>\n
These notwithstanding, the bishops observed \u201cit is troubling that
\nthe gap between the rich and the poor has grown to embarrassingly high levels.
\nWe, therefore, urge our national political leadership to take urgent steps to
\nensure equity to the distribution of the benefits of growth.\u201d<\/p>\n
Financial Sector Reforms<\/strong><\/p>\nOn the recent reforms which witnessed the closure to dozens of insolvent
\ncompanies in the financial sector, the bishops observed \u201cto the extent that the
\nexercise is meant to protect depositors from losing their hard-earned monies,
\nwe commend the central bank. We are, however, concerned about many Ghanaians
\nwhose monies have been locked up in these defunct institutions, with no hope of
\nredeeming their investments and we appeal to the government to help them
\nrecover their monies.\u201d<\/p>\n
Election 2020 <\/strong><\/p>\nOn next year\u2019s general elections, the bishops pointed out that the
\nprincipal lessons polls teach us is that no one can govern without the
\nsovereign will of the people. \u201cAs we do prior to elections, we earnestly appeal
\nto all Ghanaians to go about their preparation towards the 2020 elections in a
\nmanner that gives true meaning to democracy. In this regard, we should all
\ndesist from bribery, threats, violence, lies, insults and other evil means to secure
\nany electoral advantage,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n
ROPAA<\/strong><\/p>\nThey asked that issues concerning the Representation of People\u2019s
\nAmendment Act (ROPAA) be discussed and executed carefully to ensure \u201ca
\nsuccessful implementation because it has implications for national security.\u201d<\/p>\n
Every year, the bishops assemble to take stock of developments in the country and proffer recommendations and queries accordingly. <\/p>\n
