The mass registration exercise
\ncurrently being carried out by the National Identification Authority (NIA) in
\nthe Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions\u00a0turned chaotic when the opposition
\nNational Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Kintampo South,
\nFelicia Adjei, disrupted it with heavily built men, aka macho men.<\/p>\n

The unruly incident occurred at one
\nof the centres at Jema, the district capital of Kintampo South.<\/p>\n

The MP stormed the centre with some
\nNDC constituency executives and macho men to disrupt the exercise, forcing the
\nNIA officials to end the exercise for the day.<\/p>\n

The NDC MP and her macho men allegedly
\nrained\u00a0insults on and assaulted the NIA officials on
\nduty, making officers of the authority to run for their lives.<\/p>\n

An official complaint was lodged
\nwith the police but no arrest had been made as of press time on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The NDC MP in the company of her
\nconstituency chairman and secretary as well as macho men entered the Jema
\nMethodist Primary registration centre last Saturday at about 11:24 am and
\nsuddenly began accusing the personnel of making \u2018the system too slow\u2019 and also
\nregistering only New Patriotic Party (NPP) members.<\/p>\n

The legislator, who first
\nintroduced herself as part of the committee in Parliament responsible for the
\nexercise, engaged the NIA officials in verbal exchanges which led to the
\nunfortunate incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt about 11:24 am, I saw a V-8
\nvehicle coming towards the registration centre. When it reached the centre, the
\nMP and about six persons came out of the vehicle. She first asked one of the
\nofficers why our system was too slow,\u201d an NIA official at the scene of the
\nincident told DAILY GUIDE<\/em><\/strong> on condition of anonymity.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was explained to her that it
\nwas not the case that the system was slow but rather the long procedures that
\none needed to through rather made the exercise slow. The MP was not satisfied
\nwith the explanation and started murmuring and so the officer asked her to talk
\nto the Supervising Registration Officer (SRO), who is responsible for the
\ncentre,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen one of the macho men who came
\nwith her\u00a0queried the officer for speaking on top of his voice\u00a0with the
\nMP.Then all of a sudden, one of the macho men hit one of our Card Verification
\nOfficers (CVO). It appears to me that it was carefully planned just to cause
\ncommotion and disrupt our work because we have not recorded any such incident
\nhere ever since we started,\u201d the source narrated.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am an NDC member, my sister even
\nholds an executive position in the NDC but the truth is that it is never true
\nthat we are only registering NPP members because we don\u2019t ask anyone his\/her
\nparty affiliation before we begin the process. Surprisingly, the MP stood
\nunconcerned\u00a0while her boys insulted\u00a0and assaulted us,\u201d the source
\nsaid.<\/p>\n

Two other NIA officials told the
\npaper that\u00a0\u201cthe incident really happened and after that the exercise was
\nhalted.\u201d<\/p>\n

The MP, when reached by the police
\nfor her comments, said it was not her \u2018intention\u2019 to cause confusion at the
\ncentre.<\/p>\n

When contacted, the police confirmed the incident and said they were investigating it.<\/p>\n
