\nTony Elumelu Foundation, has urged African business and the private sector to
\nembrace the concept of Africa beyond aid agenda championed by Ghana\u2019s President,
\nNana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo.<\/p>\n
The high level presidential dialogue brought
\nparticipants from around the world and African influencers to discuss\u00a0how
\nAfrica can create wealth to fund African initiatives including trade.<\/p>\n
Speaking as part of a high level presidential panel
\norganized by the UNDP Africa on the theme; Africa\u2019s money for African
\nDevelopment \u2013 A future beyond aid, Mr. Elumelu noted that, investment in other
\nareas of African economy like power was a business investment and would
\ncontribute to the growth of the countries but an investment in young Africans
\nwould create prosperity for all. The chairman of Heirs Holdings added that the
\nsuccess of the private sector was success for all as it impacts a larger
\nsociety. <\/p>\n
Mr. Elumelu pointed out that the Africa beyond
\naid agenda was at the heart of the Africapitalism concept which he continued to
\nchampion over the last few decades. \u201cWe in the African private sector must wake
\nup, recognize and embrace our role in driving the economic growth and the
\nsocial development of Africa and we must act on that responsibility in tangible
\nways,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
He called on African governments to create the
\nenabling environment for the private sector to operate. He stressed that the
\nprivate sector could work together with African governments to create jobs for
\nthe teeming unemployed youth on the continent which can lead to growth.<\/p>\n
President Nana Akufo-Addo noted in his remarks
\nthat Africa beyond aid was not anti-Europe or America but, Africans must depend
\non each other in order to accelerate their growth. He further added that every
\ncountry in its development would welcome foreign investments and therefore
\nwould not turn away such investments. <\/p>\n
\u201cGhana beyond aid is not an initiative to be
\nhostile to foreign investors. Our continent is the best endowed in the world,
\nyet we are the most underdeveloped and this will have to change. <\/p>\n
\u201cI believe we can make Africa the prosperous
\nand joyful place it should be. Our young people must see and feel the dividends
\nof democratic development. Our success story and changed narrative would come
\nwith building economies that are not dependent on charity and handouts. Africa,
\nI am confident, will be a wealthy and dynamic member of the global community,
\nmaking her own unique contribution to the growth of world civilization,\u201d he
\nconcluded.<\/p>\n
Tony Elumelu is the Chairman of UBA Plc, a Pan-African Bank currently
