Rev Daniel Ogbamey Tetteh<\/strong> \u2013 SEC Boss<\/strong><\/p>\n

GOVERNMENT
\nHAS commended Bank of Ghana (BoG) as well as the Securities and Exchange
\nCommission (SEC) for the roles they are playing to sanitise the country\u2019s
\nfinancial sector.<\/p>\n

Vice
\nPresident Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who was speaking at the launch of the \u2018Guidelines
\nfor Repurchase Agreements in Ghana and the Ghana Fixed Income Markets\u2019 in Accra,
\nTuesday, stressed government\u2019s commitment to support the financial sector to
\nplay its rightful role in the \u201cGhana Beyond Aid\u201d agenda. <\/p>\n

According
\nto him, such commitment explained Government\u2019s support to the BoG, the SEC and
\nall relevant stakeholders in the recent financial sector clean-up.<\/p>\n

He
\nsaid by the time the different clean-up activities were complete, \u201cWe would
\nhave positioned this country on a solid foundation for economic growth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe
\ngovernment is acutely aware that a vibrant financial sector requires a stable
\nmacroeconomic environment,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

That,
\nhe said, remained one of the core themes underlying the government\u2019s growth and
\ndevelopmental agenda, insisting, \u201cWe have demonstrated in the last three years
\nthat Ghana can have a stable macroeconomic environment when we subject
\nourselves to strong fiscal discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n

He
\ncontinued that government had demonstrated its commitment to ensuring a sound
\nfinancial system and social stability by investing nearly GH\u00a213 billion to
\nsafeguard the deposits of about 4.5 million Ghanaians in the financial sector
\nbailout.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet
\nus give confidence to all depositors that we are committed to ensuring the
\nsafety of their deposits, the trading capital and lifetime savings.\u201d<\/p>\n

In recent times there have been concerns from some critics of government including the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the rationale behind the BoG\u2019s decision to merge some banks and also SEC\u2019s latest decision to revoke the licences of 53 fund management companies.<\/p>\n
