Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo <\/strong><\/p>\n

The
\nopposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has made a shocking U-turn on the
\nelection of metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs),
\nsaying it is no longer interested in their election.<\/p>\n

The
\nparty is now asking the public to vote against the proposed amendment of
\nArticle 55 (3) of the 1992 Constitution which will make the position of MMDCEs
\nelectable and local government elections partisan.<\/p>\n

At
\na press conference yesterday, NDC National Chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo said
\nthe local government system should remain non-partisan and that individuals
\nshould contest the District Assembly and Unit Committee elections on their own
\nmerit.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe
\nin the NDC want you to vote NO to stop the plan to introduce multi-party
\nparticipation in the Local Government System in Ghana. We, therefore, decided
\nto campaign for a NO vote at the referendum and to urge all Ghanaians to vote
\nNO at the referendum.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe
\nconsequence of exporting this polarization into the District Assemblies is that
\nvery soon in our villages, there will be \u2018NDC Communal Labour Day\u2019 and \u2018NPP
\nCommunal Labour Day\u2019. There will also be \u2018NDC market\u2019 and \u2018NPP market\u2019 and so
\non and so forth,\u201d Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo stated.<\/p>\n

He
\nclaimed without any proof that the NPP government \u201chas deliberately been
\nmisleading people into believing that the referendum is on the election of
\nMMDCEs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Confused NDC<\/strong><\/p>\n

On
\none breadth, the NDC said the National Executive Committee of the party had
\naffirmed the long held position of the party that MMDCEs should be elected but
\nyesterday turned around to say, \u201cWe, however, urge all Ghanaians to vote NO at
\nthe referendum because we strongly believe elections at the district and unit
\ncommittee levels must remain non-partisan.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe
\nneedless NDC-NPP polarization at the national level should
\nnot be extended into the District Assemblies and Unit Committees, which is what
\nwill happen if we vote YES to make the local government system partisan,\u201d the
\nNDC chairman said, adding \u201cour support for the election of MMDCEs has changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the government insists on making the assemblies partisan, then a new bill must be drafted, re-gazetted and subjected to serious scrutiny by Ghanaians, unlike the surreptitious manner it has gone about the current Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n
