Katakyie Kwasi Bumangama II greeting Prince Charles<\/strong><\/p>\nThe Paramount Chief of Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North Region, Katakyie Kwasi Bumangama II, has met the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, to map out strategies on how to preserve forests and forest reserves.<\/p>\n
This
\nwas during a ceremony to launch the \u2018Just Rural Transition Programme\u2019 in London
\nlast Thursday.<\/p>\n
Katakyie
\nBumangama II, whose region was once the leading producer of cocoa in Ghana,
\nexpressed worry about decline in yields due to ageing and diseased farms, and
\ninsecure farmland tenure.<\/p>\n
He
\nsaid before the forest reserves were constituted and gazetted, there were some
\nfamily settlements with farms in the areas, which were hitherto demarcated for
\nprotection and legally accepted as admitted farms. <\/p>\n
The
\nparamount chief said weak enforcement of regulations had allowed settlements to
\nexpand into forests, and the Forestry Commission was struggling to get such
\nencroachers out.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe
\ncannot continue with the status quo. Together we now have an opportunity to
\ndrive reform, make real changes to the way land and natural resources are
\nmanaged, and in the way all stakeholders \u2013 farmers, companies, governments and
\ncivil society \u2013 engage in the production of cocoa and food crops,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Katakyie
\nBumangama II, who is an experienced cocoa farmer, expressed delight in the \u2018Just
\nRural Transition Programme\u2019 which he promised to be championing in his area to
\nbring about the transformative change towards a more resilient landscape where his
\npeople, their livelihoods, food and nature can co-exist.<\/p>\n
He,
\nhowever, commended government, COCOBOD and the Forestry Commission for the
\nreforms being introduced in Ghana, including the increase in cocoa price for
\nfarmers, re-introduction of agric extension officers for artificial pollination,
\npruning of cocoa trees as well as the re-planting of trees in all cocoa farms
\nand the youth in afforestation programmes. <\/p>\n
He
\nsaid a Forest Reserve Encroachment Remediation Committee \u2014 to identify, map and profile all illegal farms
\nand settlements and developed a grandfathering and remediation plan to plant
\ntrees, reduce expansion and as well as ensure that cocoa companies do not buy
\nfrom those profiled illegal farms \u2014 had been
\nset up and some traditional authorities were involved in the programme.<\/p>\n
On
\nhis part, the Prince of Wales promised to support countries and communities who
\nare determined to fight climate change. <\/p>\n
He
\nhighly commended the paramount chief for his efforts to preserve the remaining
\nforest reserves in his area and pledged his full support for any assistance
