Dr. George Dawson-Ahmoah<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\nTHE
\nCHAMBER of Cement manufacturers (COGMAG) has denied evading taxes on imported clinker
\nat the port.<\/p>\n
This
\nfollows reports in the media that cement manufacturing companies have
\nshortchanged Ghana by over $100 million in import duties and taxes on tonnes of
\nclinker they imported into the country over the last five years.<\/p>\n
Executive
\nSecretary, COGMAG, Dr. George Dawson-Ahmoah, states: \u201cWe are saddened by the
\nfact that investigators of the said report did not contact the cement
\nmanufacturers during the survey to verify figures before making such
\nallegations. Cement manufacturers have been in the industry for many years and
\nhave been loyal and consistent with their financial obligations. We want to
\nassure the industry that our members are committed to promoting the sector and as
\nsuch will not manipulate the system for any personal gains.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201cI can authoritatively say that about 3.4
\nmillion tons of clinker was imported in 2018, with all relevant duties and
\ntaxes paid by the cement manufacturers. We dare them to authenticate the
\nfigures. Cement manufacturers are credible companies and cannot resort to such
\nillegal transactions\u201d he said and called for reconciliation from the writer and
\nthereafter an unqualified apology.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt
\nis even worthy to note that the ports of Tema and Takoradi are not the only ports
\nof entry into the country. Diamond Cement imports from Togo and other country
\nthrough Togo port. Then Savannah Diamond Cement produced clinker locally and
\npartially imports from Togo, as such in calculating the composition of clinker
\ninto the production of cement, all the sources of importation must be accounted
\nfor\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe
\nimportation of clinker involves a lot of agencies and therefore manipulation of
\nquantities is highly impossible. This is an international shipment covered by
\ndocumentation from port of origin and port of destination so such allegations
\nmust not be tolerated\u201d<\/p>\n
The
\nExecutive Secretary added: \u201cThe system at the ports in Tema and Takoradi are so
\nrigid and cannot be easily manipulated especially with bulk cargo such as
\nclinker. The cement manufacturers are ready to reconcile their importation
