\nthe University of Ghana (UG), Legon, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, has turned sod
\nfor the construction of a 4,660-bed Commonwealth Hall Annex.<\/p>\n
Estimated at
\nUS$42 million, the Old Vandals\/KPMM project is expected to deliver a fully-furnished
\n4,660-bed facility, a 1,000-seater auditorium and a shopping mall.<\/p>\n
The facility would
\nbe made up of a 302 single-bed block, a 552 double-bed block and a 3,806
\nfour-bed block.<\/p>\n
It would also
\nhave a 32 two-bedroom flat for lecturers and a sports centre.<\/p>\n
Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\nAddressing guests
\nand dignitaries at a brief ceremony on the forecourt of the hall in Legon,
\nProf. Oduro Owusu stated that the provision of housing for students has posed a
\ngreat challenge to the university over the years, adding that the total housing
\nstock at the university\u2019s traditional halls provides a total of 7,000-bed
\nspaces, which is just about 25 per cent of the entire students population.<\/p>\n
He said that
\nwhile management had considered various approaches to improving the situation
\nand with efforts by the Student Representative Council (SRC) to reduce the
\naccommodation deficit, the project comes as an important step towards the
\nexpansion of students\u2019 accommodation on campus.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost importantly,
\nit comes at a time that the Junior Common Room (JCR) of the Commonwealth Hall
\nhas petitioned the office of the President to address the accommodation crisis
\non campus. On this score, I am sure the junior members of Commonwealth Hall are
\nhappy to witness this event, and would accordingly revise their notes
\nespecially with respect to their expectations from management,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Status<\/strong><\/p>\nPresident of the
\nOld Vandals Association (OVA), Isaac Nketiah Sarpong, expressed his gratitude
\nto the university\u2019s management and other stakeholders, hinting that the project
\nwould raise the status of the hall among its peers on campus.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are going to
\nbe moving from being the smallest among the traditional halls to being the
\nbiggest. More importantly, we are going to move away from being the super
\npowers to being the ultra super power,\u201d he mentioned.<\/p>\n
Work On Existing Hall <\/strong><\/p>\nMr. Sarpong
\nrecounted that early this year, the OVA launched an appeal to raise funds to
\nrefurbish all the lavatories in the main hall and also to expand its water
\nsupply system.<\/p>\n
Work on this, he
\nassured, would start in the first quarter of next year.<\/p>\n
Occasion<\/strong><\/p>\nThe sod turning
\nceremony was held on Wednesday, November 6 at the Commonwealth Hall in Legon,
\nAccra.<\/p>\n
