Minority members of Parliament<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Minority National Democratic
\nCongress (NDC) in Parliament has claimed that the double track system under the
\nFree Senior High School (SHS) initiative is increasing
\nteenage pregnancies in an unprecedented manner.<\/p>\n

Without any basis, the ranking
\nmember of Education Committee, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe (NDC MP for Akatsi North) and
\nhis deputy, Dr. Clement Apaak (NDC MP for Builsa South), said over 1,433 girls
\nin senior high schools across the country had been impregnated and dropped out
\nof school due to the double track system rolled out by the Akufo-Addo
\ngovernment to deal with overcrowding resulting from the introduction of the
\nFree SHS programme which has increased enrolment dramatically.<\/p>\n

At a news conference at Parliament
\nHouse on Wednesday, the NDC MPs also claimed the food being provided by
\ngovernment to SHS students had expired.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe double track system and its
\nfirst born, the semester programme, which now operates like a traffic light,
\nare not helping in the delivery of quality education in our senior high
\nschools,\u201d Mr. Nortsu-Kotoe claimed.<\/p>\n

According to him, the long stay at
\nhome by students during the long vacations unnecessarily exposes them to social
\nvices such as teenage pregnancies, alcoholism, cultivation of deviant behaviour
\nand lifestyles arising from peer pressure and drug abuse.<\/p>\n

He said that through their
\ninteractions with some students and heads of institutions across the country,
\nit came to the fore that the food being served in the schools is not only
\ninsufficient but also prepared with expired food products.<\/p>\n

Besides, he claimed that the
\ntextbooks being supplied to the students are of poor quality and insufficient
\nin number, saying \u201conly textbooks for core subjects are supplied to students
\nand none for elective subjects.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Minority said all the projects,
\nincluding dormitories in the various schools, had been abandoned by the present
\ngovernment while they continually get congested.<\/p>\n

They, therefore, called on the
\ngovernment to urgently address what they called \u2018the inherent problems\u2019
\nassociated with the double track system to assuage the increasing frustration
\nof parents about the policy.<\/p>\n

Besides, they called on the government to involve what they called \u2018all stakeholders\u2019 in the running of the schools under the Free SHS programme to engender quality in the system.<\/p>\n
