President Akufo-Addo welcoming Mr Boadu-Ayeboafoh to the Jubilee House<\/strong><\/p>\n

The National Media Commission (NMC) has asked
\nfor government support to enable it to carry out its constitutional mandate.<\/p>\n

As it is now, the body that regulates media
\nactivities and operations is unable to perform its watchdog role because it is
\ncash-trapped as suggested by the Chairman of the commission, Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafoh.<\/p>\n

At a meeting with President Akufo-Addo at the
\nJubilee House (Presidency) in Accra on Wednesday evening, the NMC chairman expressed
\nworry that the commission is heavily under resourced and said it was making it
\npractically impossible to effectively monitor media output in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things that we require as a
\nregulatory body is a mechanism for the sustainable and effective monitoring of
\nmedia output. From NMC account, we have close to 300 radio stations; that is a
\nvery enormous responsibility and, therefore, an effective monitoring system is
\nvery critical,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

With that, the NMC boss said the commission needed approximately \u201cbetween $3 million and $5 million dollars to set up an effective monitoring system.\u201d<\/p>\n

Apart from that, Mr. Boadu-Ayeboafoh stressed
\nthe need for government and the NMC to look at how the Ghana Broadcasting
\nCorporation (GBC) can be turned into a true public broadcaster, saying \u201cwe have
\nset up a committee that we think can be entrusted with the responsibility of
\nlooking at how to restructure GBC and make it the public broadcaster that we
\nare looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n

That committee is set to be chaired by veteran
\nbroadcast journalist and former Information Minister, Elizabeth Ohene.<\/p>\n

President Akufo-Addo described the call to
\nreform GBC as welcome news and of great public interest.<\/p>\n

He also said the request for resources to
\nenable the NMC to deliver effectively was a legitimate one and gave an assurance
\nthat his administration would look at the issue and carry out appropriate
\nbudgetary allocation for commission.<\/p>\n

Members of the board which has been reconstituted include Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafoh, Chairman of
\nthe Commission; Nii Addokwei Moffatt, representing Ghana Association of
\nWriters; Rev. Dr. Mrs Comfort Asare, National Council of Women and Development;
\nYaw Buaben Asamoa (Parliament), Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi (Parliament), Richard
\nMawuli Quashigah (Parliament), William Orleans Oduro (Ghana Bar Association), Prince
\nHari Crystal (Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association), and Nana Addo Gyau Akabisa
\nII (Ghana National Association of Teachers).<\/p>\n

Others are Roland Affail Monney (Ghana Journalists Association), Bright Blewu (Ghana Journalists Association), Dr. Andy Ofori-Birikorang (Training Institutions and Communicators), Joseph Debrah-Gyamfi (Trades Union Congress – Ghana), Hajj Muhammed Amir Kpakpo Addo (Muslim Group), Sir Benedict Batabe Assorow (Christian Group), Elorm Edward Desewu (Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana), Elaine Sam (Institute of Public Relations of Ghana),  and Yaw Sarpong Boateng (Office of President).<\/p>\n
