\nquest of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to build a \u2018Ghana Beyond Aid\u2019
\nseems to have caught up the attention of the world, with the United Nations
\nliterally adopting the policy as part of its agenda for the development of the
\nAfrican continent.<\/p>\n
This became evident yesterday when the
\nUnited Nations Development Programme (UNDP) \u2014 an affiliate of the global body \u2014 hosted a high-level dialogue with
\nAfrican Influencers in Accra under the theme: \u201cAfrica\u2019s Money for African Development:
\nA Future Beyond Aid\u201d.<\/p>\n
The
\ndialogue seeks to explore how Africa can optimize the use of its own resources,
\ncreativity and innovation to effectively finance Africa\u2019s development.<\/p>\n
It is
\nset to examine the future of development in Africa and how to capitalize on the
\nimplementation of the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), as well
\nas the opportunities emerging from the Fourth Industrial Revolution. <\/p>\n
It is
\nalso the first of its kind to feature an interaction between a select number of
\nAfrica\u2019s political, traditional and business leaders, leading voices in
\nculture, entertainment, media and the academia.<\/p>\n
Addressing
\nthe forum, the UNDP Director Regional Bureau for Africa (RBA), Ahunna Eziakonwa,
\nindicated that President Akufo-Addo had clearly shown commitment to the agenda
\nto transform the African continent and make it self-reliant. <\/p>\n
\u201cI
\nwish to thank President Akufo-Addo for sounding the clarion call assiduously
\nand consistently working towards this goal,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
On
\nhis part, President Akufo-Addo said he was passionate about building a \u201cGhana
\nBeyond Aid\u201d and \u201cAfrica Beyond Aid.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen
\nI talk about Ghana or Africa Beyond Aid, I am simply insisting that we use our
\nresources to build robust economies that will propel us into the likes of the
\ndeveloped nations of the world; I am insisting that we stop believing that our
\ndeliverance will come from benefactors. I am insisting that we take our fate in
\nour own hands and work to bring us to where we do not look for or expect
\ncharity,\u201d the President explained.<\/p>\n
He
\nsaid at the beginning of cocoa production season in 2021 in Ghana and Ivory
\nCoast, farmers in the two countries would be paid a Living Income Differential
\n(LIB) of US$400 as part of the effort to push out the aid agenda.<\/p>\n
Besides, he said the two countries had agreed to sell cocoa with a living income premium of $400 a tonne added to the price in a bid to reform the way global cocoa is priced.<\/p>\n
