{"id":739204,"date":"2019-11-06T15:11:15","date_gmt":"2019-11-06T15:11:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/11\/06\/motorbike-firearm-handling-course-for-police-riders\/"},"modified":"2019-11-06T15:11:15","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T15:11:15","slug":"motorbike-firearm-handling-course-for-police-riders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/11\/06\/motorbike-firearm-handling-course-for-police-riders\/","title":{"rendered":"Motorbike Firearm Handling Course For Police Riders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The newly trained motor riders in a group photograph with COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno and other senior police officers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order for its dispatch riders to effectively use the rifle to<br \/>\ncombat crime while on motorbikes, the Ghana Police Service (GHS) has begun<br \/>\ntraining motor riders attached to Motor Traffic &amp; Transport Department (MTTD)<br \/>\nas part of an internal training course.<\/p>\n<p>At its closing ceremony held for 41 personnel, the Director General in<br \/>\ncharge of the MTTD, Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said crime<br \/>\nhas now become sophisticated, hence the \u00a0need for the police administration to map up<br \/>\npragmatic and tactical ways to confront these challenges posed by the<br \/>\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the personnel, he explained that the training was meant<br \/>\nto inculcate in the GHS riders contemporary road safety principles akin to<br \/>\ninternational best practices with a view to demonstrating safety procedures, as<br \/>\nwell as exposing participants to the new required way to counter violent crimes<br \/>\ncommitted with the aid of motorbikes.<\/p>\n<p>Other topics personnel were taken through included defensive rider\u2019s<br \/>\nprinciples, the psychology of the rider, the electrical components of the<br \/>\nmotorbike, operational discipline, overview of traffic rules and regulations, weapon<br \/>\nhandling on a motorbike and a series of practical sessions in riding along<br \/>\nmajor roads in Accra.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Extortion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>COP Yohuno said recent developments in the service have revealed<br \/>\nthat some police officers, including riders deployed on the roads, have turned<br \/>\ndrivers into their \u2018gold mines\u2019. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are found to be harassing drivers, extorting monies, delaying<br \/>\nmotorist unduly and allegedly making disparaging and unprofessional political<br \/>\ncomments and illegal extortion unbecoming of police professionals.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0They also seize documents and<br \/>\npapers from drivers who refuse to pay moneys to them. Most often than not, they<br \/>\nthreaten drivers who try not to pay with withdrawals of support, should they be<br \/>\nattacked by robbers or any such difficulty on the road,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>COP Yohuno pointed out that the police administration had taken exception<br \/>\nof these negative behaviours targeted to denigrate the image of the service,<br \/>\nand any police officer who engages in these unprofessional conducts would see<br \/>\nsevere sanctions being meted out to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me reiterate the point that the job of the service rider is not<br \/>\nan easy job, as it may look to people. It is very difficult depending on the<br \/>\nterrain and task assigned. You are also to note that, among others, you will be<br \/>\nresponsible for providing passage to VIPs enroute to their official duties. You<br \/>\nshould be careful, lest a road traffic crash may befall you and the<br \/>\nconsequences will be very dire.
