DENSE masses of plastic bottles and
\nrubbish clogging the Owabi water dam in the Ashanti Region have become acute
\nthat the chairman of the Parliamentary Select
\nCommittee on Works and Housing is calling for the area to be declared a
\nsecurity zone.<\/p>\n
John Nana Amoako,
\nMember of Parliament (MP) for Upper Denkira East, believes that declaring the
\narea a security zone will ward off encroachers from the dam that supplies
\npotable water to residents of Kumasi, as the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL)
\nprepares to wage a war against\u00a0the longstanding culture of throwing
\nrubbish into streams and canals.<\/p>\n
Speaking to journalists after a
\ntour of the facility, the MP stated that there would be potable water delivery
\nproblem for residents of Kumasi and its environs if urgent action was not taken
\nimmediately to stop the explosive spread of plastic containers in the Owabi
\nRiver.<\/p>\n
The GWCL said the
\nOwabi dam had lost 50 per cent of its\u00a0storage capacity due to sedimentation
\ncaused by human activities such\u00a0as\u00a0sand winning, illegal logging, farming along the banks of the river, as
\nwell as construction of permanent structures right in the catchment of the dam.<\/p>\n
According to GWCL,
\nthe Owabi water dam, which was originally built with water level of 22 feet, is
\ncurrently at eight feet with 14 out of the 22 feet silted.<\/p>\n
After witnessing
\nthe shocking sight of concentrated plastic waste in the river, members of the
\nParliamentary Select Committee wanted the GWCL to take legal action against
\nencroachers, especially those building around the dam, to preserve it.<\/p>\n
According to the committee\u2019s chairman, the GWCL needed to engage stakeholders, particularly chiefs, who wield powers in the area to fight the encroachers and the plastic menace to save the dam. <\/p>\n
