SOME
\nAGGRIEVED Nigerian traders have protested their government\u2019s decision to close
\nits borders with Benin.<\/p>\n

This
\nis because it has become difficult for traders from other West African states
\nto transport their goods to Nigeria.<\/p>\n

The
\nSeme-Krake border was closed on August 21, 2019, with Nigerian authorities
\nsaying at the time that they were trying to control to transportation of
\ncontraband goods into West Africa\u2019s most populous nation.<\/p>\n

The
\nimpact of the border closure has been severe on Ghanaian traders, especially
\nmembers of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA).<\/p>\n

GUTA
\nhas been pressuring the government to ensure that Nigeria reopens the border to
\nallow Ghanaian traders who are currently stranded at the border to enter
\nNigeria with their goods.<\/p>\n

But
\nthe continuous closure of the border is now affecting Nigerian traders as well,
\nhence their protest action.<\/p>\n

On
\nThursday, October 31, 2019, a group of Nigerian traders stormed Nigeria\u2019s
\nMinistry of Trade, Industry and Investment premises to register their
\ndispleasure over the unpopular decision of the President Buhari\u2019s
\nadministration.<\/p>\n

The
\nprotestors chanted war songs, calling on the Buhari \u2013 led government to stop
\nusing high-handed tactics in solving issues bordering on smuggling of illicit
\ngoods.<\/p>\n

The
\nprotestors urged the regime to adopt dialogue and diplomacy to tackle the
\nproblem with their neighbour, Benin. <\/p>\n

The
\npresence of the protestors compelled the Nigerian officials at the Trade,
\nIndustry and Investment Ministry to change location of a meeting between them
\nand a Ghanaian delegation.<\/p>\n

The
\nGhanaian delegation comprising Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Regional
\nIntegration, Trade and Industry, Charles Owiredu and Carlos Ahenkora, respectively,
\nwere in Nigeria to find an amicable solution to the border closure.<\/p>\n

The
\nmeeting was then relocated to Hilton Transcorp Hotel in Abuja. <\/p>\n

The
\ndemonstration attracted police to the Ministry of Trade to maintain law and
\norder.<\/p>\n

GUTA\u2019s fresh concern<\/strong><\/p>\n

In
\nanother development, GUTA has called for Ghanaian trucks stranded in Nigeria
\nfor weeks now following the closure of the country\u2019s border at Seme to be
\nallowed to move out.<\/p>\n

GUTA
\nsays it is not bothered by the extension of the border closure so long as
\nGhanaian traders who are already in Nigeria are allowed to return to Ghana with
\ntheir products.<\/p>\n

Nigeria
\nhas\u00a0extended
\nthe period<\/strong>\u00a0for the closure of its frontiers
\nto other countries till January 31, 2020.<\/p>\n
