Jerry John Rawlings (middle) with the GJA Executives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Former<br \/>\nPresident Jerry John Rawlings has described the leadership of the National<br \/>\nDemocratic Congress (NDC) as one that lacks \u201cpolitical sensitivity\u201d \u2014 a<br \/>\nshortcoming he says makes them lose sight of the wishes of the Ghanaian electorate.\n<\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nsaid the inability of the hierarchy to gauge political atmosphere in<br \/>\nconstituencies made them often support persons who are not loved by the<br \/>\nelectorate. <\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nsaid the outcomes of such decisions had eventually led to abysmal performance<br \/>\nand loss of seats during elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf<br \/>\nyou have any political sense, straight away, call your man to step aside and<br \/>\ngive it to the man whom the people have shown such warmth. And when I had such<br \/>\nproblems, I tell the people\u2019s favourite to go and stand as independent<br \/>\ncandidate. If not, we will lose the seat to the opposition,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr.<br \/>\nRawlings, who was speaking to executives of the Ghana Journalists Association<br \/>\n(GJA) at his office in Accra on Thursday, said even though he had made a<br \/>\nsimilar assertion at a recent gathering of the NDC in Kumasi, no media outlet<br \/>\ncaptured the remarks in their reportage.<\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nsaid, \u201cThis goes to show how influenced the media landscape has become by elites<br \/>\nin societies who use money to determine what the media agenda of the day should<br \/>\nbe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nformer President tasked the leadership of GJA to put up what he called a fight<br \/>\nof positive defiance to weed out \u201cmercenaries\u201d in the landscape who thwart<br \/>\njustice by concealing the truth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout<br \/>\ntruth, we can\u2019t develop, we can\u2019t move ahead and development will be stunted;<br \/>\nit will be extremely expensive and idealism will be partially crucified,\u201d he<br \/>\nstressed.<\/p>\n<p>Besides,<br \/>\nhe called for the safety and protection of journalists by all stakeholders, and<br \/>\nencouraged journalists to be discerning enough to make informed judgements by<br \/>\nsaying that \u201cyou cannot afford not to know enough; you have to know it all\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou<br \/>\nhave no idea as to the kind of joy and satisfaction you give to people when<br \/>\nthey can read a line of truth,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nGJA delegation, which was led by its President Affail Monney, paid a courtesy<br \/>\ncall on the former Head of State to invite him to its upcoming awards ceremony<br \/>\nwhich climaxes the GJA 70th anniversary celebration held under the theme:<br \/>\n\u201cDemocracy, freedom and independence of the media in Ghana: 70 years of GJA\u2019s<br \/>\ncontribution\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\n24th edition of the awards ceremony is set to take place in Accra on November<br \/>\n23, 2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By Issah Mohammed <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Flt Lt.
