{"id":732818,"date":"2019-10-28T15:32:04","date_gmt":"2019-10-28T15:32:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/10\/28\/political-science-students-defend-prof-gyampo\/"},"modified":"2019-10-28T15:32:04","modified_gmt":"2019-10-28T15:32:04","slug":"political-science-students-defend-prof-gyampo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/10\/28\/political-science-students-defend-prof-gyampo\/","title":{"rendered":"Political Science Students Defend Prof Gyampo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Prof Ransford Edward Van Gyampo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some former and current students of the Political Science<br \/>\nDepartment of the University of Ghana have thrown their weight behind Prof.<br \/>\nRansford Gyampo, Head of the Centre for European Studies at the University, in<br \/>\nthe \u201cSex for Grade\u201d scandal that hit the country some weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Gyampo was captured in a documentary put together by<br \/>\nthe BBC Africa Eye. The 53 minutes documentary which had about 10 minutes<br \/>\nfocused on Prof. Gyampo, according to the BBC, was supposed to have revealed<br \/>\n\u201cSex for Grades\u201d in some West African Universities. However, the job by the BBC<br \/>\nhas been described by many including the revered Ghanaian professor of communication,<br \/>\nProf. Kwasi Ansu-Kyeremeh, as a \u2018journalistic investigation gone rogue.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Support<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Declaring<br \/>\ntheir support, the students in a statement, jointly released with the<br \/>\n#IStandWithGyampo Movement, described the documentary as \u201cbogus and of no<br \/>\nbasis\u201d saying \u201cthe video fails to establish any case of extortion, solicitation,<br \/>\nabuse of power, intimidation or coercion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Target<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The BBC in<br \/>\nan interview with <strong><em>Ghanaweb<\/em><\/strong> had stated that they only filmed Prof. Gyampo and one<br \/>\nother lecturer, Dr. Paul Butakor, because the two were their \u201ctarget\u201d. The<br \/>\nstudents believe the professor was targeted to be silenced by the BBC, because<br \/>\nof his power and influence in the Ghanaian political scene. <\/p>\n<p>The BBC\u2019s<br \/>\nadmission that Prof. Gyampo was their \u2018target\u2019, according to the students,<br \/>\nfeeds into a sinister agenda to run down an enviable reputation without course<br \/>\nor purpose.<\/p>\n<p><strong>National<br \/>\nContribution<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Professor Gyampo, described as \u201ca dedicated lecturer\u201d by his<br \/>\nstudents, is a philanthropist who believes in community of service. This is<br \/>\nmanifested in his works in the Central Region, where he hails from and other<br \/>\nplaces. <\/p>\n<p>He has contributed immensely to Ghana\u2019s electoral politics<br \/>\nand political architecture, serving through NGOs and CSOs including the<br \/>\nInstitute of Economic Affairs (IEA), one of the nation\u2019s respected entities on<br \/>\nelectoral matters. He is an outspoken academic whose views on important<br \/>\nnational issues are well documented, both in the media and academic papers he<br \/>\nhas published.<\/p>\n<p><strong>University<br \/>\nPolicy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The students in their statement indicated their awareness of<br \/>\nthe University\u2019s Sexual Harassment Policy and how \u2018hard it bites even students\u2019<br \/>\nacknowledging that grades at the University of Ghana are to be awarded based on<br \/>\nmerit and not through any form of pleasantries including sex. \u201cWe frown on any<br \/>\nact of solicitation on the part of lecturers or students,\u201d they indicated.<\/p>\n<p>They<br \/>\nhowever emphasized that the BBC video, only showed footage of two consenting<br \/>\nadults exchanging gestures of intimacy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interdiction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Prof. Gyampo and Dr. Butakor have both been interdicted by the University while investigation is currently ongoing.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>By Nana Kwasi <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prof Ransford Edward Van Gyampo Some former and current students of the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana have thrown their weight behind Prof. Ransford Gyampo, Head of the Centre for European Studies at the University, in the \u201cSex for Grade\u201d scandal that hit the country some weeks ago.
