The
\n Ghana Union of Traders Association has rejected assurances from the
\ngovernment that relief is in the offing for Ghanaian traders stranded at
\n the Nigerian-Benin border.<\/p>\n

President
\n of the Association, Joseph Obeng says from their understanding, the
\nWest African giant is unwavering in its decision to close its borders.<\/p>\n

Speaking on JoyNews\u2019 PM Express programme<\/strong> on Tuesday, Mr. Obeng said \u201cwe have been there [Nigeria] and they reiterated what they are doing. They said it [the border closure] is going to be there for long.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not even an assurance from Deputy Trades Minister, Carlos Ahenkorah would alleviate his worries.<\/p>\n

According
\n to Ahenkorah, a government delegation from Ghana has been to Nigeria to
\n negotiate a pact. Under the agreement, Nigeria would open its borders
\nto Ghanaian goods and also allow Ghana-bound goods to cross from
\nNigeria.<\/p>\n

Carlos Ahenkorah is hopeful of relief for Ghanaian traders.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Deputy Minister who is MP for Tema West, said this agreement could be enforced in two weeks\u2019 time.<\/p>\n

But Mr. Obeng doubts the possibility of this.<\/p>\n

He told host of the PM Express, Evans Mensah that he has no faith in the government\u2019s efforts. <\/p>\n

Nigeria is on a quest to strengthen its local industries and won\u2019t budge at Ghana\u2019s request,\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n

This,
\n he noted is deliberate and a clear violation of ECOWAS protocol, which
\nrequires free movement of goods across the West African sub-region.<\/p>\n

However,
\n he argued that Nigeria is in its right to do so but said: \u201cthey should
\nhave informed\u00a0us so we don\u2019t send our goods there or even go and buy
\ngoods.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ghana should also emulate Nigeria and close its borders, Mr. Obeng said.<\/p>\n

Why has Nigeria closed its borders?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The government of Nigeria in August said it is time to end rampant smuggling across the porous frontiers.<\/p>\n

The
\n decision is aimed at preventing weapons and drugs from entering the
\ncountry and not just to stop food smuggling, Finance Minister Zainab
\nAhmed said this week.<\/p>\n

The border closure\u00a0has, however, received widespread criticism from across the sub-region.<\/p>\n
