(RICCS) has<br \/>\nexpressed concern about inappropriate disposal of liquid waste, particularly<br \/>\nfaecal matter, which is in contrast with its campaign against Open Defecation<br \/>\n(OD).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The committee has condemned activities of<br \/>\ndisposing faeces and people defecating in the open environment, like pouring<br \/>\nfaeces on farmlands, without recourse to it hazardous health implications to<br \/>\npeople living around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Mr Melvin Tagoe, an Engineer with the<br \/>\nCommunity Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), who expressed this concern at the<br \/>\n2019 third quarter RICCS meeting in Wa called on people to adopt proper systems<br \/>\nof getting rid of faeces to avoid air, soil and water pollution and prevent<br \/>\ndiseases such as cholera. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">He said Waste management agencies and the<br \/>\ngovernment needed to establish a treatment plant to help to treat faeces after<br \/>\ndislodgment to prevent diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">\u201cIf you will pour it raw on the farm, then<br \/>\nyou should allow the people to be defecating openly on the farm,\u201d he said,<br \/>\nraising the issue of cholera is one of the diseases of national concern because<br \/>\nof its potential to breakout in into an epidemic proportion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Last year, the Ghana Health Service issued<br \/>\nan alert about the possibility of cholera outbreak saying, as the rains had<br \/>\nstarted to set in at certain locations and will be getting to its peak season,<br \/>\nthe risk for cholera outbreak was high. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The CWSA has warned that disposal of<br \/>\nuntreated faeces in the open could infect vegetables such as cabbage and carrot<br \/>\nplanted on farms where faeces are deposited in large quantities and also bring<br \/>\nout diseases like typhoid. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">About 162 communities attained Open<br \/>\nDefecation Free (ODF) status between December 2018 and September 2019, bring<br \/>\ntotal number of ODF communities in Upper West to 695 out of 1,167 communities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The Upper West Regional Monitoring and<br \/>\nEvaluation Officer of the Environmental Health and Sanitation Department<br \/>\n(EHSD), Mr Agambire Inusah Alhassan told the stakeholders in the Water,<br \/>\nSanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector that efforts were made to achieve the<br \/>\nregion-wide ODF by 2021 set for the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">In efforts to improve regional ODF status,<br \/>\nEHSD in collaboration with UNICEF and Wmintuur Microfinance, are implementing<br \/>\nthe District Sanitation Fund (DSF) project to provide loans to rural households<br \/>\nfor construction of household latrines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Madam Catherine Amissah, General Manager of<br \/>\nMwintuur Microfinance, said GH\u00a2 96,462.00 was earmarked for the implementation<br \/>\nof the project within a three year period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The project, which starts from 2019 to 2021<br \/>\nseeks to help bridge the financial gap in the implementation of the Community<br \/>\nLed Total Sanitation (CLTS) concept.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">She said most households in the region were<br \/>\nwilling to construct household latrines, but lacked the funding support, which<br \/>\ninformed establishment of the DSF. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span
