Tarkwa (W\/R), Oct.
\n15, GNA – The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has turned down about
\n2,324 applications for the 2019\/2020 academic year due to limited academic
\nfacilities, financial challenges and human resources.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Vice Chancellor
\n(VC) of the University, Professor Jerry Kuma, said many of the applicants had
\ngood grades but because of those challenges they had to turn down their
\napplications.<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Kuma said
\nthis at the 15th Matriculation ceremony of UMaT to officially admit
\nfresh students into its undergraduate and post graduate programmes.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs parents
\nourselves we know how it feels to turn away qualified young men and women with
\ngood grades,\u201d he lamented.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Vice Chancellor
\nsaid the institution was working closely with the Government to solve the
\ninfrastructural challenges to enable them to admit more students next year as a
\nresult of the Free Senior High School Policy. <\/span><\/p>\n

In all 3,005
\napplications were received out of which 681 students, representing 23 per cent
\nof the total applicants, are undergraduate students including foreign
\nnationals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Out of this figure
\n461, representing 68 per cent, are males while 218, representing 32 per cent,
\nare females.<\/span><\/p>\n

This percentage
\nincrease in female enrollment is the highest in UMaT\u2019s history as the
\nUniversity was working seriously to encourage more females to study
\nengineering.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the area of
\npostgraduate admissions, he said the University admitted 197 students out of
\nthe 215 applications to pursue various programmes leading to the award of MSc,
\nMPhil and PhD degrees, adding that that brought the total postgraduate
\npopulation to 358, which was 12 percent of the current total student enrollment
\nof 2,790.<\/span><\/p>\n

The University, for
\nthis academic year, has mounted a number of demand-driven certificate
\nprogrammes including Survey and Mapping, Water Resource Management, Geological
\nAssistantship, Small Scale Mining and Quarrying, Minerals Technology, Environmental
\nStudies and Occupational Health and Safety.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thirty one students
\nhave been admitted to form the maiden batch of those certificate programmes,
\nProfessor Kuma noted.<\/span><\/p>\n

He entreated the
\nstudents to remain focused throughout their stay on campus, place premium on
\ntheir academic work by being regular at lectures, carry out all their
\nassignments and avoid unacceptable behavior such as smoking.<\/span><\/p>\n

He assured parents
\nthat management of the University would do their outmost best to guide their
\nwards and give them the necessary skills that would propel them into a future
\nwith many opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n
