President Akufo-Addo being briefed by Prof. Nyarko<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Nana Addo
\nDankwa Akufo-Addo on Friday, October 11, 2019 visited the New York University
\n(NYU) Research Center for Technology and Economic Development (CTED) in Kumawu,
\nAshanti Region.<\/p>\n

The purpose of his
\nvisit was to afford him the opportunity to learn about Commodity Exchange
\nResearch.<\/p>\n

President Akufo-Addo
\nwas visibly elated as Prof. Yaw Nyarko, an economist at New York University,
\nwalked him through the activities of the Center and Commodity Exchange
\nResearch.<\/p>\n

Initially, the Food
\nand Agriculture Minister was outside the hall where the President was being
\ntaught, but as the President became much more interested in the activities of
\nthe Center, he asked for the Agric Minister to join him.<\/p>\n

Dr. Afriyie Akoto
\nupon entering the hall immediately identified with the NYU Research Center and
\ntold the President that the project of CTED formed part of some of the highly
\ninnovative projects the government, through the Food and Agriculture Ministry,
\nwas exploring to promote and sustain food production and security.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 Really nice! The
\nproject is so important,\u201d the President told Prof. Nyarko as he was being
\nwalked through the operations of the Center and Commodity Exchange Research.<\/p>\n

Curiously, the
\nPresident asked \u201care you creating these (drone technologies) things?\u201d<\/p>\n

The drones were on
\ndisplay at the Center and caught the attention of the President.<\/p>\n

The President was at
\nthe Center with his team of ministers including Minister of Education, Matthew
\nOpoku Prempeh; Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Robert Ahomka-Lindsay;
\nRoads and Highway Minister, Amoako-Atta; National Security Minister, Kan
\nDapaah; and Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah.<\/p>\n

CTED is working with
\nabout 300 smallholder farmers nationwide.<\/p>\n

Speaking to
\njournalists after seeing the President off, Prof. Nyarko said efforts were
\nbeing made to reach out to more farmers.<\/p>\n

He stated that there
\nwas the need to support farmers in Ghana and also attract more youth into the
\nagricultural space through the introduction and use of smart technologies.<\/p>\n

Prof. Nyarko has long
\nstudied the economic impact of commodities exchanges in Africa, looking at how
\nfarmers can adopt new technologies like mobile phone apps for trading, for
\ngrowing their businesses and transforming agricultural value chains.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n

He is in partnership
\nwith Chris Udry, one of the donors of CTED, currently conducting a national
\nsurvey that focuses on output markets in sub-Saharan Africa, using Ghana as the
\nprincipal study area.<\/p>\n

The main hypothesis
\nis that smallholder farmers are acutely aware of incentives they face, and with
\nsomewhat steady predictable output markets, provide the right incentives for
\nAfrican farmers to make the economic decisions that many researchers find
