The impounded vessel<\/strong><\/p>\nThe Western Naval Command of the
\nGhana Navy has impounded an industrial trawler with the number AF 756 for
\nallegedly engaging in illegal fishing on its way to neighbouring Cote D\u2019Ivoire.<\/p>\n
The impounded vessel had Chinese
\nand Ghanaian crew on board who were subsequently escorted and detained at the
\nWestern Naval Base in Sekondi.<\/p>\n
A joint team of the Fisheries
\nEnforcement Unit, Ghana Navy, Marine Police and Ghana Maritime Authority carried
\nout inspection on the vessel. Personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service were
\nalso involved in ascertaining the immigration status of the Chinese crew on
\nboard.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Commodore Theophilus Kafui, Command
\nOperations Officer at the Western Naval Command who disclosed this at a press
\nbriefing on Thursday, said \u201ccertain fisheries infractions\u201d were found on the
\nvessel during the joint inspection.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He revealed that 405 cartons and
\n864 slabs of frozen mixed small pelagic fish species, generally below the
\nminimum landing size as well as undersized mesh with sizes less than the
\napproved 60 millimetres, were found.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Commodore Kafui added that the
\nMarine Police had brought charges based on the infractions against the captain,
\nthe chief engineer and the second officer of the vessel.<\/p>\n
He mentioned that two Ghanaian crew
\non board were, together with the Chinese, put before a Takoradi Circuit Court
\nfor engaging in illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He added that the suspects pleaded
\nnot guilty to all the charges levelled against them and
\nwere granted GH\u00a2500, 000 bail each with two sureties, one of whom must be a
\nresident of Sekondi-Takoradi.<\/p>\n
Commodore Kafui said as the case
\nwas being heard in court, the counsel for the accused persons and the owners of
\nthe vessel as well as their company, Gyinam Fisheries Limited, Wahid Iderisu Wampouri
\npleaded for out of court settlement.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cSo the Fisheries Committee in
\nTakoradi arranged an out of court hearing of the case on October 9, 2019 during
\nwhich the counsel for the accused persons pleaded guilty to the charges,\u201d he
\nstressed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He indicated that the counsel for
\nthe accused persons also agreed to pay the penalty of $1 million and an
\nadditional fine of GH\u00a2124,000 for the fish on board the vessel at the time of
\nthe arrest.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was in accordance with Section 88A of the Fisheries Amendment Act, 2014 (Act 880). The owner has up to 30 days to effect full payment of all the fines or the case will be reverted to court,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
