{"id":720177,"date":"2019-10-10T10:24:32","date_gmt":"2019-10-10T10:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/10\/10\/ecobank-earmarks-3-years-to-fight-non-communicable-diseases\/"},"modified":"2019-10-10T10:24:32","modified_gmt":"2019-10-10T10:24:32","slug":"ecobank-earmarks-3-years-to-fight-non-communicable-diseases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/10\/10\/ecobank-earmarks-3-years-to-fight-non-communicable-diseases\/","title":{"rendered":"Ecobank earmarks 3 years to fight non-communicable diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-io-article-url=\"https:\/\/www.adomonline.com\/ecobank-earmark-3-years-to-fight-non-communicable-diseases\/\">\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ECOBANK-GHAHA-MD-DAN-SACKEY-696x522.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"ECOBANK GHAHA MD, DAN SACKEY\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">ECOBANK GHAHA MD, DAN SACKEY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Ecobank Ghana has earmarked the next three years to raise awareness about and to fight Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in the country. <\/p>\n<p>In line with that, the bank has set up a special<br \/>\naccount into which customers and the general public have been asked to donate<br \/>\ninto to raise money to fight the diseases, which include cancer, hypertension<br \/>\nand diabetes mainly. <\/p>\n<p>Managing Director, Dan Sackey announced this at a forum this year\u2019s Ecobank Day in Ghana, under the theme \u2018Preventing NCDs in African Communities.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>The forum brought together health experts in the NCD<br \/>\nsector, and representatives of World Health Organization to highlight the real<br \/>\nchallenge NCDs pose and to chart a way forward in the three-year fight.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Sackey noted that Ecobank Day every year,<br \/>\nusually focus on a particular issues and deals with it, but this time round,<br \/>\nthe focus on NCDs will span the next three years.<\/p>\n<p>He said the fight is being done in all 33 African<br \/>\ncountries where Ecobank operates, adding that in Ghana, the fight takes off<br \/>\nwith awareness creation in five market centers in Accra, Tema, Kumasi, Takoradi<br \/>\nand Tamale. <\/p>\n<p>According to him, Ecobank is collaborating with the<br \/>\nHealth Ministry, the NCD Alliance, WHO and medical students across the country<br \/>\nto distribute educational materials on various market centers about NCDs<br \/>\nprevention. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur main objective in 2019 is to enhance the<br \/>\nprevention, management and control of NCDs among staff and stakeholders. The<br \/>\nconversation will include the consequences of inactiveness or sedentary<br \/>\nlifestyle and other lifestyle choices that are detrimental to our health,\u201d he<br \/>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a report from WHO indicated that the main<br \/>\ncauses of NCDs are tobacco, alcohol and inactivity (lack of exercise). <\/p>\n<p>The report indicated that very little is being spent<br \/>\non prevention of NCD, adding that if nothing is done to stem NCDs growth, by<br \/>\n2030 it will cost the world US$7 trillion, but fighting it between now and 2030<br \/>\nwill cost the world US$170 billion. <\/p>\n<p>Experts are therefore urging governments to increase<br \/>\nthe taxes on tobacco and alcohol to make it less attractive for businesses to<br \/>\ninvest their moneys into it. <\/p>\n<p>But Head of Public Health at Korle-Bu Teaching<br \/>\nHospital, Dr. Philip Amoo said most NCDs are hereditary so if the disease is<br \/>\nnot in one\u2019s family, lifestyle can hardly cause the disease to occur. <\/p>\n<p>He is therefore urging Ghanaians o make it point to<br \/>\nfrequent hospitals for checkups so that any hiding NCD can be detected earlier<br \/>\nand be prevented from rearing its ugly head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery often you hear people boast about not visiting<br \/>\nthe hospital for a long \u2013 that is foolishness because if an NCD is hiding<br \/>\nsomewhere in your body, it will not be detected early and that is not good for<br \/>\nyou,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Dr. Amoo is also urging all major hospitals in the<br \/>\ncountry to establish public health departments where people can walk in and do<br \/>\ncheckups instead of everyone joining a long queue of sick people at the<br \/>\nout-patient departments just to do checkup. <\/p>\n<p>Deputy Director of NCDs at Ghana Health Service, Dr EfiaCommeh bemoaned the poor budgetary allocation for NCDs, saying that very often her department depends on donor funding, which is not consistent and so their work is hampered. <\/p>\n<p>According to her, in 2016 alone, over 16,000 cancer<br \/>\ncases were detected and by 2018, the figures have reached 22,000 plus an<br \/>\nadditional 1,000 plus cases of child cancers detected. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are reported cases so you can imagine how<br \/>\nmany more cases are hiding and have not been reported.
