Alan Kyeremanten \u2013 Trade Minister<\/strong><\/p>\nTRADE MINISTERS
\nand senior officials from 53 Commonwealth countries will gather in London to
\nexplore strategies for deepening trade and investment, while supporting a
\ntransparent, inclusive, fair and open rules-based global trading system.<\/p>\n
The Commonwealth
\nTrade Ministers Meeting will take place on 10th October, following three days
\nof discussions among senior trade officials from 7th to 9th October. <\/p>\n
Chaired by the
\nUnited Kingdom, the focus will be on strengthening multilateral trade, fighting
\nprotectionism and progressing efforts to achieve $2 trillion worth of trade
\nwithin the Commonwealth by 2030.<\/p>\n
According to Secretary-General
\nPatricia Scotland, \u201cOur Commonwealth approach recognises that all are able to
\ngive and all are able to gain by coming together in our rich economic, cultural
\nand geographical diversity we learn much from one another and are able to
\naccelerate inclusive and more sustainable progress for all. Amid global
\nuncertainties, the Commonwealth remains a champion for transparent, inclusive,
\nfair and open rules-based trade.\u201d<\/p>\n
The UK Secretary
\nof State for International Trade, Elizabeth Truss, said, \u201cThe 53-member states
\nin the Commonwealth boast of a combined population of over 2.4 billion people
\nand intra-Commonwealth trade is projected to reach $700 billion by next year.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe global
\noutlook on trade is changing rapidly and we face the ever-present challenge of
\na rise in protectionist tendencies. Together the Commonwealth member countries
\ncan help to fight against protectionism and promote a transparent, inclusive,
\nfair and open rules-based multilateral trading system.<\/p>\n
\u201cNext week\u2019s
\ntrade ministers meeting in London will help build on the progress made at the
\nCommonwealth Heads of Government Meeting last year as we seek to take advantage
\nof new opportunities with some of our oldest friends.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ministers will
\nalso reflect on how to make trade more inclusive and sustainable, by engaging
\nmore women and youth at all levels, as well as developing the blue and green
\neconomy.<\/p>\n
They will review
\nthe progress made under the Commonwealth Connectivity Agenda \u2013 an initiative
\nlaunched by heads of government last year to support economic growth, job
\ncreation and the sharing of best practices and learning among members.<\/p>\n
This includes
\nmoves to harness the digital revolution in Commonwealth economies and create an
\nenabling environment for the private sector to tap into global trade,
\nespecially micro, small and medium enterprises.<\/p>\n
The
\nSecretary-General added, \u201cWe see intra-Commonwealth trade expanding too, and by
\nworking together we can agree and implement policy options so that within the
\nnext decade it reaches the $2 trillion goal set by our heads of government at
\nCHOGM 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n
The outcomes of
\nthe meeting will shape trade-related discussions at the next Commonwealth Heads
