{"id":719554,"date":"2019-10-09T12:15:43","date_gmt":"2019-10-09T12:15:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/10\/09\/design-sustainable-buildings\/"},"modified":"2019-10-09T12:15:43","modified_gmt":"2019-10-09T12:15:43","slug":"design-sustainable-buildings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/10\/09\/design-sustainable-buildings\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Design Sustainable Buildings\u2019 &#8211;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Ing William Evans Halm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ING WILLIAM Evans Halm, Chief Executive<br \/>\nOfficer (CEO) of Spektra Global, has called on built environment professionals in<br \/>\nGhana, to design sustainable buildings over the next 50 years to help<br \/>\naccommodate the growing energy needs of Ghanaians.<\/p>\n<p>Delivering a presentation on \u201cSustainable buildings<br \/>\n\u2013 a shift towards Zero Energy Buildings\u201dat the just-ended International Building Construction and<br \/>\nProperty Exhibition at the Accra International Conference Center on Friday, he<br \/>\ndefined<br \/>\nsustainable building design as strategies that focussed on maximizing the use<br \/>\nof resources such as energy, water and other materials while reducing the<br \/>\nbuilding\u2019s impact on humans and the environment over the life cycle of the building.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ing Halm, over the next 20<br \/>\nyears, sustainable buildings would become a necessity for any city to survive<br \/>\nbecause sustainable buildings led to lower utility tariffs, used less water<br \/>\n(20-25 per cent compared to conventional buildings), saved about 30 per cent<br \/>\nenergy, had low maintenance cost and exhibited better indoor quality of space<br \/>\nleading to healthier, happier and better productivity as well as performance. <\/p>\n<p>To encourage such a drive on the African<br \/>\ncontinent, he called on governments, development partners and non-governmental<br \/>\norganisations, to play active roles that would help attain such an objective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor sustainable buildings to take firm<br \/>\nroot in Africa, a deliberate attempt should be made to encourage it by means of<br \/>\nmotivations such as incentives (waivers on building permit application fees),<br \/>\nreduction on taxes for companies to build sustainable structures, complete<br \/>\ndevelopment of infrastructure to support selling back excess energy produced by<br \/>\nbuildings, which would eventually lead to sustainable cities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Net<br \/>\nzero buildings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He also said it was about time the<br \/>\nGhanaian built environment witnessed net zero buildings that would emit less<br \/>\ncarbons.<\/p>\n<p>Making reference to a research piece by<br \/>\nLewis A. Asante and Alex Sosu in 2018, titled \u2018The Challenge of Reducing the<br \/>\nIncidences of Building Collapse: Analysing the Perspectives Of Building<br \/>\nInspectors In Kumasi\u2019, Ing Halm highlighted: \u201cIn the current climate, the built<br \/>\nenvironment will continue to pose a threat to human life and property<br \/>\ninvestment. Although unpleasant to contemplate, the study concludes that Ghana<br \/>\nmay witness more building collapses in the near future if the aforesaid<br \/>\nchallenges are not addressed.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong>Way<br \/>\nforward<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The CEO of Spektra Global among other things<br \/>\nrecommended collaboration between built environment professional associations,<br \/>\nbuilding regulation authorities, and development control institutions to define<br \/>\nprocesses and guidelines for ensuring improved construction practices, site<br \/>\nquality control and safety. <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, he called for private sector investment in standard construction laboratories to support construction quality control especially in all major urban centres in Ghana.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A business desk report <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ing William Evans Halm ING WILLIAM Evans Halm, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Spektra Global, has called on built environment professionals in Ghana, to design sustainable buildings over the next 50 years to help accommodate the growing energy needs of Ghanaians.
